Hey Rikky -
So, if you've read the "New to Lyme?" thread you know my stand on Rx vs natural antifungals if you already have an existing overgrowth.
I've never heard of the association with "rebalancing flora" - that's exactly what you're trying to do with reducing fungal load. We all have and need fungus in our body - but in a balanced micro biome. Maybe that's a reference to the yeast/fungus becoming resistant. This is more of a risk with naturals (which is why you want to take only two at a time and rotate new ones in every 2 wks).
A strict, no-sugar, no-simple carb diet is critical for anyone with y/f issues. If you take the Rx antifungals but continue eating those foods, the yeast/fungus will figure out a way to adapt.
I think it's a little tougher to develop resistance against the pharmaceuticals but probably not impossible. But it's a little tougher to find the right anti fungal Rx. Diflucan and GSE were shown not to be effective on my strain of yeast/fungus (on my Doctor's Data stool test), but Ketoconazole was. I tried Diflucan anyway (because yes, it is a risky drug) but it didn't help and I was in crisis. I switched to Ketoconazole, had relief within a couple of days and took it for a year without incident. My liver enzymes creeped up a little bit after the first month. I was already on milk thistle seed so I added in burdock root and that did the trick.
With respect to your question about using two at a time - depends on which two you're talking about. Your throat issue is likely originating in your gut, and the yeast/fungus is growing up your throat. That happened to me frequently. The best remedy for a throat overgrowth is to take the PURE powder form of Nystatin - it's more powerful, has none of the fillers and can work immediately on contact. Neither the pill Nystatin or any systemic antifungals can do that. They offer a spray version for kids - it has sugar and tons of fillers in it - don't bother with it.
The local anti fungal systemic anti fungal is the Nystatin, typically pretty safe to use long-term (it's naturally derived from the earth). I've taken it for about 2 yrs. The systemic anti fungal does cross the gut's mucosal barrier and it gets processed through the liver and kidneys, which is why you need to be on support to help metabolize it and keep your enzymes low. I know many people who take a systemic anti fungal as long as they are on antibiotics.
I think whether or not you need to be on a systemic Rx at all depends on the severity of your yeast/fungal overgrowth and your history with overgrowth. If you never really had any overgrowth until you started abx or antimicrobial treatment and don't have a systemic issue, you would probably do OK with the Nystatin powder as long as you're on abx.
If you do have systemic issues or have a history of y/f issues, you can try taking both for a month or two, which should get your y/f load way down, and then try using just the Nystatin powder for the remainder of your treatment. If your diet remains good but the overgrowth creeps back, you should go back on the systemic Rx for another month.
I wouldn't pulse the antifungals - it's best to hit it hard and fast and linger to be sure you're rebalanced, and then take something for maintenance. You might even be able to transition to all natural antifungals once you're certain the load is way down and stays down.
Regarding the molybdenum and panethine - that might also work, but again, most everything I read in my research suggests that people with existing overgrowth need the Rx to kick back the overgrowth immediately and quickly. Since your second post sounds like you're not sure, I think it's a good approach to try. But whatever Rx or natural anti fungal you take, you need to also incorporate a strong binder to detox what you're killing.
Hope this is helpful!
