I'm in a bit of a weird situation. I live in the UK, but my LLMD is in Italy where I was diagnosed a few months ago (and choose to keep him, since he's the only one I've found who knows what he's talking about).

My Italian doc recommended a treatment of doxy + plaquenil for 3 months. But my UK doc (who's well-versed on Lyme but not an LLMD) is not willing to give me the plaquenil; he is afraid of the side effects. I understand the plaquenil is supposed to be cyst-busting. I am wondering if there is something else that could substitute it that my UK doc might find more palatable?

If it's for cyst busting - then you could do either Flagyl or Tindimax.

Some Dr.'s are reluctant to prescribe Flagyl because studies showed that when administered to rats (or mice?) it caused bladder cancer.

Tinidazole wasn't part of the study...but it is in the same class...and seems to have a bad reputation from that.


The thing about Plaquenil - it has an incredibly long half-life 30 - 50 days!!!!

Most antibiotics are measured in hours...NOT days.

So, it stays with you for many weeks to months after discontinuation.

For a natural cyst buster - there is Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE)

I read somewhere that Plaquenil can actually help Borelia?

You can use GSE as a natural cyst buster

not sure what your LLMD's deal is with plaqeunil. it does a number of good things. it's a cyst buster, anti-inflammatory, anti-malarial (for babesia if you have it) and makes other abx's more effective. i've been on it for 6 months with no issues.

if you are looking for other cyst busters there are a number of options. one i recently heard was malarone. if you have babesia its a good combo.

The one who prescribed it is an LLMD, but the doc I go to to get the prescriptions in the UK is not...hence the problem.

I'm worried because if my LLMD suggests plaquenil but I cannot access it here in the UK, what can I do?

Is GSE as effective as antibiotics for cyst-busting?

P.S. I don't have Babesia, or any co-infections.

Some say that Diflucan is also a mild cyst buster.

not sure effectiveness of GSE versus abx but its a well trodden solution and worth considering. it has some cross reactivity so you want to look into that.

How do you know you don't have any co-infections? Most (if not all) do.
