My daughter who I believe was also infected with Lyme and Co. when she was young (she's 35 now), messaged me this:
"The whole right side of my back feels like a cross between a really bad sunburn and or a bruise. In fact I keep looking at my back to see if it's bruised. It's very painful to touch, even my clothes are irritating. It started yesterday and I was just going with it thinking it would go away by this morning and it hasn't. "

I was her age when I first got infected, and I had the same thing, which was diagnosed as Shingles.

Honestly I cannot remember if she ever had Chicken Pox, or if this was something she was vaccinated against.

She still could have been exposed, I guess.

I've advised her to watch for any kind of a rash, of course. And not to put cortizone creams on it.

Any ideas?


ETA: She's been dealing with gall stones lately, and fevers/vomiting from that, and she is confused about what this new symptom might be related to.

Update. It seems she has had Shingles before, when she was living in Florida about 9-10 years ago.

Age 35, she was probably vaccinated for chicken pox. But, I don't think that means you can't get it later in life or shingles.

I watched my mom and another dear older friend suffer from shingles so when I became of age, I got the shingles shot for old people. This was way before I had lyme. I don't know if I would get it now.

I can tell you that I would be sitting there and all of a sudden I would feel like someone had punched me in the arm. Gosh, it was such a real bruise feeling. It was freaky how real it felt like I had been hit.

I also have had the burning sensations on parts of my skin and nothing was there.

But the most annoying was the feeling like a bug or a hair was on me. I cannot tell you how many times I have swatted something or brush off something I felt was there...... and, alas, there was nothing.

Lyme symptoms are so weird and you just can't explain this stuff to someone who doesn't know.

I hope she can figure this out, poor thing.

Olive leaf extract worked well for someone I know who had shingles. She struggled for about six month and nothing helped. When she started the olive leaf, it started to ease and eventually cleared up.

Thanks Tanyain! I was looking up olive leaf extract here for someone else earlier in the week and while I don't think it was for Shingles, I saw some pro's and con's I need to revisit. THis is probably something I could get from the Health Food store, and much quicker than ordering.

I used to get mine from health store. It's not a problem to find. Hope it helps.

I won't be able to get her any until next week sometime, whenever I can get away. She doesn't have transportation or money. So I told her to dab some extra virgin olive oil on it to see if it soothes.


I don't know if she has any left, or if it would help, but maybe coconut oil would help ease it too.

Hi Julymorning, I am hiding under the covers typing using only one blurry eye. I've already been caught once using my iPad hahahahaha. I'm not supposed to use it before tomorrow while my eyes rest from the surgery.

Shingles. My husband had shingles. He described it as a 'feeling' of a sunburn on his back. This sensation was followed by a rash in the same area. His experience with it was:

If you take the antiviral drug within five days of the initial onset of the symptoms, the clinical signs will abate. The duration of the symptoms will be shorter.

My DH was on ACYCLOVIR.

It apparently is not effective after five days of symptoms.

I am smiling big that your surgery went well.

I had exactly what your husband experienced, she hasn't got a rash yet, but I did look that up and saw that a rash isn't always apparent. I gave her the link, because it had explicit instructions on getting treatment for it. Medical treatment. Now she has nothing to put on it because her mother in law used all of her olive oil and didn't tell her. I dont' have any either.

Hoo boy. She hates water. I finally got her to drink lemon water, but I am sure she has never bothered to buy any lemons since she wore out the one I gave her.

She is having a terrible time with any and all food with this gall bladder/stones thing, throwing it up or getting even more pain. I think her bile duct is blocked by one of the stones.

She needs to have it removed. The e.r. said she needs to have it removed. But at least twice now they've said it's not inflamed bad enough for emergency removal, and she already had one surgeon take $100 from her and tell her he won't remove it. (We both think because she doesn't have insurance).

Christmas Day is going to be miserable for her, and me watching her suffer. If this IS shingles, it couldn't have come at a worse time for her.

I hope it isn't shingles! If it is, she might have missed a window of time where the worst of it can be staved off. You have to catch it right away. I had it when I was 28 - excruciatingly painful. took me 3 months in bed to recover and years before the sensations went away. Lyme aggravated the old sensations. Wretched stuff. If it is shingles, she'll need something strong for the pain. awww.... terrible!

She probably will Multi. I don't remember how long I had it, but since I supposedly got Pleurosy at the same time, I was put on antibiotics for 10 days for that, which don't help the herpes virus at all, nor did it help my Lyme, which came on full force for the first time immediately after that. That's where I trace my first Tick disease infection(s) to.

I remember sitting around with a sheet draped around me, because I couldn't handle clothes touching my skin.

So char boeme site says shingles is caused by varicella-zoster virus ..which is a herpes virus ..which is type3 ...which i read is a monkey born virus ...that a 100 years ago no body had ebv ,cmv or herpes and with the onset of vaccines which actually have monkey blood serum in them that most adults have them ...it is also thought that older people with run down ommune sx only get shingles its not true for immunocomprimised people like persons with lyme ,bartonella erlichia etc ...

A buddy in his 20s with severe lyme also has shingles said it resolved with 18 months of bvt ...if thats notbin your daughters scope then lysine and st johns may be antiviral ..lomatium is amazing also ..

for gall bladder ginger is a good stimulatornof bile ...if it stuck then more extreme measures may be called for ...gall bladders are needed yo process gats anf we as lyme patients need fats to te nerve and protect cells ...l ornathine can relax the duct ,malic acid in apple juice and the classic lemon and olive oil lying on righ side with a epsom salt dosing ..i believe may help look up details of cleanse

L-lysine and l-arginine though they have to completely balanced. That's where I went wrong with the last-lysine per my doctor. So if you take 4,000 mg of l-lysine it has to be balanced by the same or close. Thorne makes a slow release l-arginine. If interested I'll look up the name.

I'm sorry your daughter is sick. My son often says his back hurts and describes what your describing.

Have you ruled out a kidney stone? It sounds like you are on top of it and I hope it's not kidney nor shingles.

I also hope she gets to enjoy Christmas. She has a GREAT mom, that we know.

Is it possible for her to get Acyclovir? It can help rather quickly.

100 years ago, they hadn't discovered half of the things that have names now.

I would try giving her some lysine - high dose though. As someone else mentioned, Shingles is a herpes virus and herpes viruses often respond well to Lysine treatments.
