Good explanation of CD57 and its use in Lyme

On that note... I recently took a CD57 test. LLMD did not start me on any treatment even with 41+ 34 Ind on igenex test. Although still thinks 'highly likely' Lyme wanted me to do more bloodwork first. Ok whatever I guess, not really any more choices in the area.

So I went last Friday to do a CD57 at Labcorp. Unfortunately I did not read that bit about testing on Friday. Does anyone else have experience with this? Had blood drawn on Friday for CD57? Just worried it still won't provide any more insight :/

I got the original to work. If the first try doesn't work, I usually highlight again, and next try clicking the "go to....(with the link following) option. Then if that doesn't work I try a copy and paste in the search bar.

The "go to" option works.


What a fantastic article! Very informative. Something that should be bookmarked or journaled, if it can't be added to our intro.

I especially liked this paragraph: "It is important to remember that the CD57 result is just a number; far more important is the patient’s clinical status. An old professor of mine used to say, “treat the patient, not the lab test!” There is still much we do not know about the CD57 marker and what other factors may lower or raise it. However, overall, the CD57+ NK count is a useful tool in diagnosing and treating chronic Lyme disease in most patients. As a measure of immune status, it provides an indirect measure of bacterial load and severity of illness. Furthermore, in a patient who has a negative or indeterminate Lyme test but is highly suspect for the disease, the clinician may utilize the CD57+ NK count as one more piece in the complex puzzle of a Lyme disease diagnosis."

To be honest its use is controversial. Some docs think that it is a bonafide marker of Lyme if it is low, and others say....not so fast. The CD57 can evidently be low or high and the patient can have Lyme. Also there are other illnesses that effect the CD57. One of my doctors follow it for progress, the other one goes by symptoms. My doctor who goes by symptoms said there are several studies where the CD57 was taken 3 different times during the day on patients and each reading within that day for each patient was drastically different. Meaning it's variable.

Now your doctor can also test the C3a and C4a. It is said that C3a is high in patients with Lyme and the C4a is high in patients with mold. Again, controversial. I tested high on the C4a and also did mold testing and there was no mold. Some doctors use the C4a as a Lyme marker.

You'll find that often there are more questions than answers.

Controversial? Lol what isn't with this? That's pretty interesting about how it possibly fluctuates even on the same day, while also discouraging. Just another tool that may tell you something, or nothing at all. Sign. Anyways thanks for sharing.

Like the article said it's a piece of the puzzle. If someone is suspected to have lyme a low CD57 count can help further the diagnoses.

If it's normal or high, it doesn't/can't rule out lyme. So like I said in the other thread it is only helpful in one direction. But yes only a piece of the puzzle.
