IM Penicillin (shots)

My LLMD has suggested IM Penicillin shots administered twice weekly via the rear end area lol. I'm a bit perturbed so I'm inquiring on the forum to find out more info before considering this form of treatment.

Has anyone tried IM Penicillin shots for treating Lyme?
Has it been effective?
Would Amoxicillin work similarly as its pretty much the oral form of a penicillin antibiotic?
Is it typically covered by insurance?
And if not what's the typical cost of Penicillin out of pocket?

I don't know anything about the cost or whether insurance covers the shots.

I think the IM Penicillin shots are slow release so they stay in your system longer.

Oral Amoxicillin - on the other hand - has a very short half life of one hour.. so it isn't in your system long.
Often a LLMD will prescribe an old gout medication called Probenecid to be taken with the amoxy - this helps keep the amoxy in the bloodstream at higher amount for a longer time.

The shots you are referring to are IM Bicillin shots and as Girlie mentioned they are a time release injection. The medicine forms tiny balls once it's injected which release over the next few days. The twice a week injections should have the medicine in your bloodstream for most of the week. The shots are not really comfy. Icing pre shot will help.
