Grains? What areeee thoooooose?
edit:
Johnny, were you counting your calories? I'm on a ketogenic diet (low, low, low carb, and high fat, high protein). There's more science to it than this, but, basically, when your body's in ketosis it's running off of fats.
I don't know much the efficacy of building muscle on a ketogenic diet versus a more traditional one, but I'm fairly certain it's possible. I don't know if you've heard of a website called reddit; it's basically a giant forum, right? Well, there's a subreddit called /r/ketogains, which is dedicated to exercising for people who subscribe to a ketogenic diet.
I haven't spent much time there myself, because I'm more focused on just keeping weight on than I am building it. Though, I have started going to a gym. But, really, I just focus on getting enough calories and protein in, then let nature do the rest.
I used to be the same way, with a limited dieting, obsessing over all the things I couldn't eat, wondering how I'd survive. The weight melted away. The beginning of last year I weighed 119 lbs, which is terrible, considering I'm 25/M and 5'10. Flesh and bone. I totally understand the struggle to get the muscle back.
I'm 145 now, and have been for a few months. I eat a few lean meats, healthy fats and oils, and low carb veggies.
There's pros and cons to everything, of course. I'd like to get back to a more traditional diet too. But, I mean, if it's fungal, no grain, or whatever it is that's making you lose the carbs and thereby the calories, don't think that means you can't keep on weight and still workout.
Though, again, the goal should be to get back to something more traditional. Paleo.
I feel like this keto stuff is gonna be a big thing in the future, but I haven't done enough research on it to feel comfortable with it being my mainstay. It does keep your body fed tho, somehow.
All of this may be immaterial to you, just saying it, because I wish someone would have told me about
it when I first started out.
