Doxycline and internal bleeding?

I'm two weeks into my Doxycline regimen. This evening after going to the bathroom what was left on the toilet paper was rust-colored, so if it's blood it came from further up the GI tract. Has anyone experienced this on Doxy? The prescription says to take it on an empty stomach, but that may not be an option anymore. Fortunately I'm seeing an LLMD tomorrow and we'll discuss it. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same experience and how concerned I should be (like, call the emergency room?).

Doxy is one of the antibiotics that I suggest people take with food...because it can be hard on the stomach.

...I started it on empty stomach (2014)...and I believe it was members on this forum who suggested I eat with it...especially since with lyme...we are treating for many months to years...and hurting the tummy early on...is not a good idea (Not that it ever is....but early on..you could bring on issues that get in the way of more treatment)


I did not have any bleeding.

You could wait until tomorrow and see if it subsides....but if you get a lot of blood coming out..then you might have to give the ER a call (do they take calls?)
If it's just coloring the toilet paper when you 'go', it's most likely not an Emergency - but I would get it checked out if it doesn't stop.

Wondering what the LLMD had to say?

My husband has had serious, life threatening bleeds, so if you are passing a lot of blood, never ever wait until the next day! But, if it's only a little on the toilet paper, then it's safe to wait until the next day or even a few days usually - just don't put it off for long.

As it turns out, it says clearly on the bottle TAKE WITH FOOD. (I'm a proofreader as a profession, so this is especially embarrassing.) However, in my defense, the fine print literature that came with the prescription said "it is best to take on an empty stomach at least one hour before food." I read that before I noticed the bottle. I pointed out this contradiction to the pharmacist who said "I wish they would change that." Yeah.

Interesting that they find contradicting information of that nature on a prescription more of a nuisance than a danger! Grrr!!
