Son has burning throat and gagging feeling. Anything I can do?

My son is experiencing a gagging feeling/burning sore throat in middle-base of throat.

He is up to full dose of Amoxicillin (875 mg. 2x a day).

Does Amoxy. do this?

What can I do to help him?

Doesn't that sound like acid reflux? It does to me. Any abx can do this if his stomach conditions are just right. Or wrong as the case may be.

Incidentally, I just finished a short course of amox. left over from a year ago, and I didn't have this. Same dosage as your son. But my innards just tested on the high ph side instead of acidic.

Hi. Yes does sound like acid reflux but odd it would happen after less than a week on it.

It was a high allergy day today so wonder if it's that.

If it stays or gets worse will call the doctor.

I know I have read esophagus/gagging feelings on here but not sure what the triggers were.

Huddie - is he drinking a lot of water when he takes it?

Some of the pills bother my throat...and I have to take more than a glass of water with them.

The burning sensation, etc., was not listed with side effects from amox. I just checked. So I'm still going with the acid reaction.

I can't find if he should try taking it with food, and what kind of food that would reduce the acid in his tummy, but DO keep a watch on the back of his throat for the white patches, which would indicate the yeast overgrowth/Candida.

It can be taken with food.

Food always helps me with these antibiotics.

It sounds like acid reflux. Had this symptom for years. If it improves on apples, nexium or something similar over the counter it's acid reflux.

Dr Horowitz uses septra for resistant babesia and bartonella smile I don't think it's all evil

The problem we have is that some of our symptoms - especially when we herx are the same as some bad side effects of these antibiotics.

We need to remind ourselves that Steven Johnson syndrome is RARE.

Thanks everyone.

He was up three times in the night and came in to tell me he couldn't sleep and couldn't breathe. I calmed him down and it wasn't a breathing issue.

Then our dog kept coming in all frantic, which he never does. He was worried about our son. So sweet.

He says throat feels like it is closing up, coated, gagging feeling. So tired today.

Will give him apple today and see if it helps.

He does eat before taking meds. He doesn't go more than a three hours without food.

Calling triage this morning.

Blue, will read link later - thanks. Don't need one more thing to be nervous about and he's not on Sepra yet. I'm slowly ramping up - thanks Girlie yeah

I'm so sorry to hear this! I do hope that things settle down for you and your son!

Remember that it could be herxing too - I don't know how long he's been on it?


As far as any of these treatments being "evil", they aren't - but we do need to be FULLY aware of what we are taking, the side effects (we take relatively high doses for long periods of time), and to realize that what's right for one may not be right for another - and this doesn't matter what type of treatment we are talking about. Nothing we do is completely "harmless".

Thank you so much. I do keep that in the back of my mind. We are both super sensitive so as you and Dr. J (the herbal Dr. J) tell me, low dosages may work just fine for us.

Hopefully J. Clinic will agree.
