Hi. I'm being treated for early Lyme (started eight days after bite, no symptoms then except EM rash). As I progress through the Doxy protocol (among other things) I'm getting new discomforts almost every day--lots of pinpricks, burning, headaches. After discussions on this forum and with my LLMD, it's fairly obvious this is a herxing episode. (Though my previous ND says the Doxy could be causing the damage, citing risks of using it long-term.)

Anyway, assuming a herx, how long do these tend to last? I have begun various detox: epson baths, Alka Seltzer Gold, lemon water, milk thistle, etc. I'm only a day or two into that, so no surprise why I don't feel better yet. But if I've been detoxing for a week and don't see improvement, maybe I AM having a reaction to the drug itself?

Just wondering if there is an "average" herxing period. Strange that I'm having one at all since I had no symptoms when I began treatment. I thought treating early localized Lyme would be a tap-in putt. Guess I was wrong.

There's no telling who will herx and who won't with early Lyme - it's all about how quickly the bacteria moves through the body.

There is no set amount of time that a person will herx either. It's all about how long the detox pathways in the body take to move those toxins out. I've herxed for a full 12 months before.

And, it may take weeks before you help your body detox enough to see a good reduction in symptoms. No one knows until they go through this.

You may want to change up your diet as well, if you haven't already. Eliminate gluten, sugar, alcohol and dairy and see if that helps. The sugars feed the bacteria. You may also want to try a binder like activated charcoal or modified citrus pectin.

Try as many detox methods as possible to find out what works best for you. For me sauna does miracles, instantly eliminating anxiety. Other detox methods are just meh, no improvement or very small.
