I was on azithromycin and minocycline for lyme and coinfections. Made significant improvement on them but had 3 lingering symptoms:

Fatigue
Air Hunger with chest palps
Extreme chills

my Lyme doc suspected Babesia and potentially bartonella so has me on:

Doxycycline
Azithromycin
Atavaquone
Rifampicin

the doses are not particularly high but I was concerned about being on 4 when horowitz book says 3 is normally max. Any ideas?

Also do I need to avoid Q10?

Atovaquone and Rifampin aren't usually prescribed together.

Rifampin can make the atovaquone ineffective.

I would ask your Dr about that.

Are those to be taken daily.. or pulsed?

Pulsing 3-4 abx makes it more tolerable.

same - I did not take rifampin and atovaquone (mepron) together. I took mepron and zithromax; or rifampin and zithromax at the same time, with my main abx (amoxicillin)

No CoQ10 with Atovaquone - you're correct.


*** I have seen charts of Dr. H protocols - and there are some 4 abx combinations.

i would definitely get an answer from your doctor if he has you taking rifampin and atovaquone at the same time as almost no one does that.

I have seen others say they have been on 4 at once; but like the others have said, rifampin and mepron do not usually do together.

I am currently on a similar protocol for babs and lyme- mino, zithro, and mepron.

and no- you should not take coQ10 with mepron.

david - will you describe your chills?

Are they just - that you are cold all the time? Or do you shiver internally?

Most ABX I was ever on was:

IV Rocephin
Zith
Mepron x2
Bactrim
Tindamax (2 day/week pulse)

plus Rx Actigol and herbal Cat's Claw

But like others... never was on a Mepron and Rifamin combo at same time.

I don't much about abx. except that I don't like them.

My son, who is small and not even 100 lbs. is on four of them. Not all at once, pulsing so different days, but still.

He has very similar symptoms as you do except for the chills.

Based on Girlie's expertise, I would call your doctor. Sounds like some things do not mix.

Where would we be without this board? Feel better.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Much appreciated. I will check regarding rifampicin and atovaquone. He added rifampicin just to cover bartonella I think. I am on the four antibiotics continously now but Mon Wed and Friday for azitromycin. Also on Artemisin.

The chills are extreme. They wake me up 3/4am my body is shaking etc. Almost like ice veins kind of thing. It's horrible symptom for me. No matter how many layers I have on I am shivery during the episodes. Apart from. That and air hunger I am doing pretty well. Just need to get rid of this babesia!

Good - glad you're checking with your Dr.


I can't figure out if mine are chills...I shiver - but internally...no goosebumps...and no shaking that can be seen.

I'm confused by the comments regarding CoQ10 - I understood you need to supplement w/ CoQ10 while on mepron, as it will deplete your natural supply. But the comments here suggest avoiding it. Am I thinking of a different Rx?

You're describing my sx almost exactly. My Lyme nurse mentioned babesia as well, and wanted me to up my adrenal support - babs can trigger adrenal issues. I have recently had extreme temperature bursts (cold to hot, and hot to cold) - not as extreme as yours but everything I've read points toward adrenal struggles.

P - it shouldn't be taken with Mepron. It inhibits Mepron from working.
Dr. Burrascano mentions not to take it while on Mepron.

Fascinating about Babs and adrenals. My son and I both have babs and I have adrenal issues.

Lately, my son's back pain has migrated and now he points to exactly his adrenals.

Dr. J. clinic told him to take CoQ10, which we were both already taking.

I gave it to him the entire time he was on Malarone, not knowing that I shouldn't have done that.

My doc also switched focus to babesia about a month ago. I can't shake this darn air hunger, fatigue, and racing heart.
Currently on:

Mepron, taken with fatty foods, no coq10.
Azithromycin
Clindamycin.

Hoping to add Alinia soon, so that would be 4 for me too.

Also taking Crypto Plus.

They did BUT he isn't on Mepron/Malarone right now.

They want to hit Lyme hard and worry about cos later. In their opinion his Lyme wasn't hit hard enough.

We'll see.

Taking it in between sounds like a good plan. You're so smart yeah

Girlie - i think i get a similar sensation as your shivers. I will wake up (not cold)with a shaking vibration in my chest. Is that similar? It kind of goes in spurts. I almost wondered if it was like a panic attack thing. Even though I don't feel panicky.

Interesting on coq10...mitochondrial damage needs it and its the mechanism by which antimalarials work...cununfuxingdrum

also on topic i made gains when on bvt roceph zith riffy and herbs not necessarily all together but all together.that 5 modalities not counting rife ,iv silver .which was in there too...one day when i did all in one day i almost fished but now looking back it was worth it

Well… people… let's keep looking into the CoQ10 thing. Might be one of those roving determinations that MDs change their minds about. Or it could depend on the person.

I had them in the back of my head/neck - woke me up twice from a dead sleep. I think this was infection raging, since I hadn't been dx yet. Kinda scary. In my sleepy stuper, I blamed the new neighbor - he had red irises and made me feel like he was placing a hex on me. Then I woke up.

P - I have vibrations too - my 'shivers' are different though - it's like when you get those shivers up your spine when something scary or exciting happens.

OH! I remember you mentioning it but that is a good description - I think I now understand what you mean. You're right - we're experiencing different sensations.
