What to expect from doxy?

Hi,

Apologies that I make a lot of these threads. I feel a little nervous when I take new meds but I'll say my worries about fluconazole were put to rest so far, at least at a low dose it has been easy on me.

Anyway I'm sure a lot of people here have taken doxy for Lyme. I actually never took it even in my original Lyme treatments years ago I took amoxocillin and other abx.

My understanding is you need to avoid sunlight on doxy? Anything else to look out for? Is it stronger than other abx?

I also got metronidazole which my llmd wants me to take twice a day for three days in a row weekly while the doxy is daily.

Yes, doxy and sunlight was really bad for me. I am fair though. But, I did put sunscreen on...but the backs of my hands got burned - red and also some little itchy bumps....just going to town and back. It's between 10-15 minute drive each way.

It was July.

I did minocycline last summer and it was fine.

Doxy can be hard on the stomach...I took it with food. Do not take it with calcium, magnesium or iron supplements...or anything that is high in those minerals.

I herxed on day 4 of taking it.

That's good that you're pulsing the Flagyl.

Detox frequently and regularly. Doxy can be very hard on you if you have had your infections for any length of time.

Be aware of your mood changes with Flagyl, especially irritability and anger. Again, trying different modes of de-toxing and using a binder will go a long way to making both of those abx easier on you.

Do not, if you are inclined to drink any, use alcohol while taking Flagyl especially. Not even a few ounces.

I'm adding Doxy to the mix next week. However, I think I'm going my LLMD to switch it to something else when I see him in June. It's impossible to avoid the Texas sun in summer. And I don't want to be stuck in the house all day.

Thanks! I will definitely avoid alcohol especially on flagyl but I try to avoid anything extra that effects the liver in general on meds.

I'll also keep in mind detoxing. Lemon water tends to be my go to so I hope that helps.

I had issues with doxy and the sun in May in NY - not sure you will make it too far with it being that you live in Texas! Sunscreen does not help. you need to just cover your skin with light clothing. I did that, but as Girlie said, my hands got burned too from just driving a car. It can be severe.

Minocycline is an option, but my Dr did not have as much success with it, so she switched me to Bactrim DS and it did wonders.

Definitely sandwich in the doxy with food. Eat, then take it, then eat again, and drink a full glass of water. It can cause you to reflux and hurt the esophagus if you don't do this.

your question with the salad - salads are fine. Doxycycline is a medication in the tetracycline family, and alot of people think that you need to avoid calcium and minerals, but you do not. It does not affect the medication's absorption, so you need not to worry. Just don't take it along with probiotics and you will be fine!

Expect 5 days of mild discomfort or nausea and then expect that to go away. I am interested in what you experience. How much nausea for how long.

It ruined my stomach. I'm still having GI issues from it over 1 year after stopping.

Small amounts of calcium/magnesium in food will be okay. Just take any supplements of Calcium/magnesium and iron a couple hours away. You don't want to reduce the absorption.

Have you found other antibiotics easier on your stomach?

I wonder if that's common or not with doxy. My stomach also got messed up from past antibiotic use but having a better diet seems to at least help it.

I am so sorry to hear this but am glad that you shared so we are aware of the risks. Once you are done with antibiotic treatment you may want to consider bravo probiotics to rebuild the gut flora. It is expensive and this is why I dont use it during antibiotic therapy but if I ran into serious complications I might make an exception.

You can get the culture to make the yogurt from bravocoop.com

The yogurt can be delivered in an enema. Bravo also makes suppositories which run about $200 for 12. There is a product that sells along side this on amazon that is about half the cost but it is NOT the same product.

The other thing you may want to try is to find a healthy donor for fecal transplant. The thing I have learned about this is that there are some essential anaerobic bacteria in the feces that will be disturbed and destroyed by mixing as it aerates the mixture. Therefore some have minimized mixing and air exposure.

I was going to try this but I figured if I had any parasites this would be futile and so I decided to do an anti parasite protocol first.
