Elevated liver enzymes question

Hi everyone, I have not been on antibiotics for a year but still take lots of supplements and herbs. I have in total about 1 glass of wine a month, maximum, spread out over the month. I had 3 sips of my husbands red wine last week and then had blood drawn 3 days later that showed moderately elevated liver enzymes. I also took ibuprofen the day before the test for a muscle strain.

Would either of these contribute to my abnormal test results?

For years I took multiple antibiotics and antimalarials and never have had elevated liver enzymes. So strange. I have been on all the recommended liver support supplements for years and years, I eat impeccably etc..

I would encourage you to follow up on this, as something is going on. What you have listed is not enough to make your liver enzymes high by themselves without someone else going on - like your tick-borne infections - but you've said that you've taken the abx and things for years without any issues.. It may just be that your feeling the effects now, but do look into it, please.

Ibuprofen does cause liver inflammation, which raises liver enzymes: www.livestrong.com/article/19395-effect-ibuprofen-liver/

Also, there are many ways to lower liver inflammation, most of them are detoxing the liver is all.

Just wanted to echo Traveler's suggestions... you'll want to get on top of this.

I have had labs drawn on a wkly and/or monthly basis for the past couple of years for various reasons and it's been fascinating to observe what affects liver enzymes and what doesn't --the proof is in the numbers! I love sharing this when people doubt the efficacy of herbs over pharmaceuticals.

I'm grateful that I can take milk thistle seed and burdock root, which helps control my enzymes through two solid years of abx and other meds. Since I'm on so much, I now require both. But this is something you can try.

Thank you Traveler and Pirouette. I am getting tested again next week.

The strange thing is I have been on milk thistle, NAC, and Alpha lipoid acid every day and I drink dandelion tea almost every day. Loads of water...

Its very odd. Traveler thanks for the link regarding Ibuprofen. Maybe that is the culprit. Have not taken any in several weeks so will get a clearer picture on that next week.

I didn't think 3 sips of wine could do it but who knows...

Actually, if it was red wine, it will have anti-inflammatory properties in it because of the grape skins that are used which contain resveratrol. I don't think 3 sips is enough to do much though.

Mine were elevated (bilirubin, ALT and AP) - I think those were all I get....this was when I was treating lyme with antibiotics....

My GP (non lyme literate Dr.) was fine as long as they didn't go too high.

My LLND wanted me to take a break to let them come down...so I stopped treatment for 2 1/2 months...they came down to in-range...and I resumed treatment - this time for bartonella. Rifampin is generally hard on the liver...but my enzymes continued to drop...for the next few months...and stayed in range throughout bartonella treatment.


It can be medication...and/or infections - including die-off that contributes.

I doubt if it's the wine or the ibuprofen - that's not enough consumption IMO.

How often do you get them checked? Did you see a trend upward with them?
