Depends on the kind of brush - some (boar bristles?) can't get wet. I can't remember details but I'm sure you can find info with a web search.

I use shampoo and a fine tooth comb to scrub everything out, and let it dry face down (its wood, so I don't want the wood to get soaked and crack)
I have no clue what kind it is, got it in Europe many years ago, before I ever knew one fateful day I'd need it for Lyme.

I ruined my first one...it dropped into the full bath tub...and then I just thought it would dry on it's own. It got moldy.
I guess I should have dried it with a blow-dryer.
My second one - I haven't washed it yet....afraid I'll ruin it too.

I have never cleaned mine. When I look at it doesn't look dirty. Do not know how I would do that.

I've never cleaned mine and never noticed any kind of funkiness. I do replace it when the bristles lose their shape.

I keep one of my tampico bristle brushes with wood handle hanging in the shower and rinse it with clear water. It's been fine so far.
I also have the same kind that I use even if I'm not going to shower, just for skin circulation and defoliating and I just rinse it off too once in a while. Immediately if I'm sweaty. I don't know if skin cells are sticky but I would think they must be very light in weight and come off the brush easily.
