Is leaky gut a fad? Not any more than chronic lyme is a "fad". GF might be a fad with some diet followers who might not even benefit from it. But for other readers here, "leaky gut " can exist in some individuals, and no its not in their heads. There is proven science behind it.
Yes, I'm aware of the "science"...
As I stated: "I would include Gluten-Free and Leaky Gut, too,
at a high level."
People are quick to jump on a bandwagon...whatever it may be. I've been guilty of this, too, so I'm truly not throwing stones. I'm simply trying to offer a different perspective that I wish I'd read long before dietary fads caused me harm. Possibly irreversible harm.
Also, there's the confusion of correlation and causation. If I eat gluten on a day that my Internet service goes down, they I could conclude that gluten causes Internet outages.
Think and do what you will, of course. If gluten bothers you, then don't eat it. But, I would imagine that many people are already suffering enough without having to add restrictive eating on top of everything else. Again, I'm speaking from experience, which is why I'm so emphatic.
For the record, as I've previously noted, gluten-containing foods probably aren't the most nutrient-dense foods available, anyway. So, I'm not championing them...or, any food, really. There are no "magic" foods.
As for Gastrointestinal Hyperpermeability ("Leaky Gut"), I'm well aware it's a legitimate medical condition and I never asserted it was in peoples' heads. Those were your words, not mine. However, just because someone has some GI discomfort, they don't necessarily have leaky gut. There are many people [wrongly] self-diagnosing the condition and then following some wacky, restrictive diet that's usually not needed.
Like "mpost" stated, modern medicine is far from an exact science. Any of us can get on PubMed and find studies (or, even weaker, case reports) to support our position. This is what many "expert" health authors do to sell more books. Look at Dr. Oz, for example, who will support a Paleo diet one day and a Vegan diet the next.
Finally - and, again - the best thing people can do is experiment on themselves and let the results speak for themselves. But, I would imagine few are in a mental/physical/emotional state to be as rigorous as they would need to be, in order to get good data. Add Chronic Lyme Disease and the odds are further reduced.
Thanks for your comments, astroman.
