Hi! I have a question about astragalus use in my particular case, as I have had Lyme for a long time ( at least 10 + years )- but it has gone untreated . I know astragalus use is not recommended in chronic Lyme, but is used in prevention & acute Lyme cases.

My w/b test was positive - both IGG & IGM, and a LLMD I spoke to on the phone indicated this means I have active Lyme . Is this true despite the length of time I've been infected?

The reason I'm so interested in astragalus is that I have some major kidney stuff going on, & have been taking a kidney support product which contains astragalus. It really helps relieve/ reduce my kidney issues along w/ many other symptoms . I want to continue taking this product, but not if it's going to cause me more trouble in the long run...

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Astragulas is discouraged for chronic Lyme due the die off and herx may be more than one can tolerate. I did an Astragulas challenge test a year ago to check my Lyme infection load. I had no reaction so I stayed on it at 1000mg per day for preventative purposes.

Maybe the dosage of astragalus in your kidney support product is pretty low. If it is working for you just stay with it. If things change when you are further along with treatment stop it then to see if it is contributing to sx.

Great, thanks so much! & you're correct , the amont of astragalus in the product is quite low, I think 150mg / 2x a day.
Also interesting to hear about your Astragalus challenge...

It was un-eventful. I had suspected for some time that Lyme was in the background and most of my remaining sx were from either Bart, BLO, or Proto.

I was recently bit by another tick while on my 1000mg daily dose, I then immediately upped the dose to 3000mg per day for 30 days and stayed full time on ABX that I had previously been pulsing 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. I'm phasing down to 3 weeks off next week.

Buhner states that taking Astragalus when you have chronic lyme can cause an autoimmune reaction.


Casa - you do have chronic lyme (even though you're IgM positive)

Girlie, I was kinda afraid of that- thanks for clearing up my confusion about chronic/ vs. acute Lyme.
