Hey guys,
So I'm having an absolute horrible day and I was wondering if I'm experiencing a herx. I've been very functional the past few weeks on bactrim and omnicef. 11 days ago my llmd has me taking 1/2 a pill of plaquenil 2x a day along with the bactrim and omnicef.
The past few days have been rough but today omg I'm so sick. Nausea, bad neuro issues, brain fog, dizziness, anxiety, bouts of crying, etc.
Does this sound like a herx to you?? I just can't stop crying!

So just about
two weeks ago you started the plaquenil, it could be herxing. Have you also been able to detox on a regular basis , that is so important too.
I know some of us after a few weeks of a new abx have experienced herxing.
I have experienced every symptom you said when herxing, except the nausea.
I hate that when we feel so bad, I cant figure out if I'm crying because I'm so tired of the increase in symptoms or the disease itself making me weepy .
Hang in there and I hope this passes soon for you. Others should be along soon hopefully with more experience about
the plaquenil.
Take care, Jo

Thank u for responding! I try my best to detox daily. I drink detox tea with lemon twice a day, do 30 minute saunas, milk thistle, burbur & pinella. I haven't felt this bad ever. Literally couch bound. Plus I've never experienced a herx before, this must be my first one! Oh what fun

I'm so sorry, Physedgirl! Herxing IS miserable!!!!
Detox, detox, detox!!! If it's a herx, this should lower your symptom severity some at least. Try using some binders for a few days too, that should lower your toxin load the quickest, but do keep up with any and all detoxing for a while!!

So should I go to the health food store and pick up activated charcoal traveler? I've never used it. What exactly do I do with it?

You can get it at Walmart. I take it 2 times daily, 3 capsules. Allow a 2 hour window before and after taking because it effects other meds/suppliments

So to be safe, can I take it before bed? I take my last meds at 6

Hope you feel better soon.
I find that I need more than a glass of water with the Activated charcoal...or else I'm constipated. (TMI - sorry)
So I will drink 1 1/2 or 2 glasses of water with the AC.
Sounds like the timing is right for s herx,,,with starting those abx a few weeks ago and adding in the Plaquenil 11 days ago.

Great!! I'm so glad to hear that it all worked so quickly for you! Please do increase what you do for your daily detoxing - take the time to find what helps you the most and stick with it. That way you won't have this hit you so hard each time.
Then watch for the early signs of herxing and increase your detoxing or add in binders at that time - don't wait. This will greatly reduce the misery from herxing. When you can, be sure to start off on low doses of medications, supplements and herbs to allow your body to adjust to it more slowly.
Hopefully, this will be the last time you deal with such misery!

I just wish the brain fog and dizziness would go away. That's my worst symptoms that I have with Lyme.

Sorry, not being on here consistently keeps me from remembering everyone's details (not that I was really that good at it previously!!!lol!), but are you
open to using herbs?
Have you tried using Kudzu root for the brain fog? Increased detoxing, with the use of kudzu root has helped me a lot.
Do be sure that it's not your blood pressure fluctuating that is causing your dizziness. If you have a BP cuff at home, you can check this throughout the day and let your LLMD know if there is something that is concerning. But, so that you know, many Lyme patients deal with that dizziness. I had orthostatic hypertension that made me quite dizzy - but it cleared up with healing. I can still bring it on if I'm not being reasonable - standing up much too quickly, spinning around and things like that.

My blood pressure is always 96/55. My whole life. It never caused dizziness. I only started to get the dizziness and brain fog when my Lyme symptoms started. I've never used herbs. Currently I'm on omnicef, bactrim, and plaquenil. But I'm not opposed to trying an herb to help with the dizziness.
Can u point me in the right direction as far as where to buy this herb and how to take it?

Buhner has the best information on these herbs in my opinion. He explains them quite well in his books - but essentially, if you choose to try this, you should start off on a very low dose and build up slowly. If you start on a tincture, then start with one drop a day and stay on that dose for at least 5 days before raising it to two drops (one drop am and one drop pm). You can build up to 1/4 - 1/2 tsp of the tincture, up to 3 times a day if you find it's helping you.

Great!! Let us know if you have questions!!!
Do be sure to take a good look at the area in his book that talks about
what to use, what doses are appropriate for dealing with the symptoms. You may find several things you want to try! Just remember, slow and low!!!

And it's ok to use along with antibiotics right?

Physedgirl - I buy my Kudzu from Woodland Essence.
A couple other Buhner recommended sources for tinctures : Sage Woman Herbs, Montana Pharmacy
(I know you asked Traveler - but thought I'd answer...lol)

Yes, it is.
But make sure you start low with the dosing...as in a drop or two...
