Hey Everyone Ed here 29/M from Perú. I would like some advice on the following (I will add a TLDR before the questions)

It all started when I moved to a rural area near the capital last year. Around January of this year
I got bitten 2-3 nights repeatedly by an infestation of nymph ticks (didn't know about ticks stages and their danger except that our pets can get them). Apparently they only put a false ceiling on my room and the top was a nest for pidgeons (the only explanation on a possible vector and why only my room got such a full scale infestation when none of the other rooms which had normal roofs on the second floor got any).

Fast forward at the end of January I began to get full blown panic attacks out of nowhere. Anxiety went through the roof, couldn't leave the house, became incapacitated and had to leave my job. For this you have to understand that I was an IT tech that traveled around the country, faced stressful situations head on and have faced many hardships in life. But this... this is anxiety that comes from nowhere. On top of that heart palpitations, shortness of breath and recently fatigue have become apparent too.

I have been to so many MD's of all areas. Ended up being sent to CBT therapy and prescribed benzos which help in a way but not completely (apparently Im also hypothyroid now). If its hard finding LLMD's in the states imagine here ("Lyme? Bartonella? that doesn't exist here just relax and take it easy, go to therapy" I would say studies that date back from the 90's say otherwise but MD's here are 90% of the time deaf to anything else they dont know)

I have analyzed many times possible causes for this and the only correlation I have found is a before and an after from the tick bites. So I have researched a lot on the subject. But me being in the side of the planet makes it tricky to get a proper diagnosis or finding an LLMD.


TLDR: Got bitten many times on January of this year by an infestation of tick nymphs. Developed heart palpitations, shortness of breath, panic attacks, fatigue and anxiety which last to these days. I live in Peru which makes getting tested in IGenex somewhat impossible unless I get to travel there.


I would kindly ask for some advice on the following:

1. Knowing the Western Blot Bands can I order the test on my own? (or maybe ask for an HIV test) or the bands on the WB are only specific to what you are testing?

2. If not how can I get tested for lyme and lyme co-infections?

Welcome Ed,

You don't need to go to the Igenex Lab in Cali.
The test kit can be ordered (it's free) and then you get a Dr to sign the lab req that is provided.
Get the blood drawn and send it back to Igenex via FedEx.

I'm not positive that it can be done in SA - but I don't see why not.
The Lyme WB is $210 total.

You can also ask your Dr about doing a Lyme WB at a lab where you're located.
It is a specific test for Lyme. An HIV test won't test for LD.

Even if you do get a test there, I would also contact Igenex and talk to them - as it is a lab that specializes in tick borne disease testing. Often we test with our local lab and get a false negative and then test again with Igenex and get a positive or at least some positive Lyme specific "bands" that indicate you have LD.

I hope you are able to find help and begin at treatment. There are books that are very helpful:Stephen Buhner's "Healing Lyme' 2nd edition and Dr Rawls " Unlocking Lyme" They may be of help to you.

It looks you got some infection from tick bites, I would not bother about exams.
Even with a positive exam, your drs will only give you a few weeks of antibiotics. It's not enough.

If I were you, I would treat myself with herbs or some zapper like Hulda Clarks or both. If you improve, that's what matters.

Some symptoms you describe may even be babesiosis. How you're going to find anyone to prescribe you the right treatments?

I would invest my time, energy and resources to find a solution by myself. Meanwhile, you can still send your blood to igenex. But suppose you get a negative exam, even that is not a warrant you are Lyme free.

And if Peru is already getting some coinfections, are you going to spend your life trying to find out?

Finding a positive diagnosis is just a small part of the problem. The biggest problem, no matter where you live, is to find treatment.

That's why I would inform myself with books such as Buchner or other treatment modalities, start treating as fast as possible, and meanwhile you may still send your blood here and there to get some confirmation.

I saw a couple of papers published in Brazil about Lyme. It seems tha number of cases are increasing there. Some universities there are starting own research as pathogens there look different than in the USA or Europe.

Do a search in Portuguese with the words "doença de Lyme", infecçāo, estudo, pesquisa or something like that.

Researches there are still investigating Lyme in a more free way than here in Europe or in the states. Maybe that's because only a few cases have appeared. If you find nothing, I can try to help you.
