I've launched herx deathspirals/immune storm loops from overaggressive treatments. Even after I stopped the therapeutics the herx like symptoms kept continuing, in one severe episode it took me almost a year to recover/stabilize. Someone was just telling me the other day this can be due to bartonella induced autoimmunity issues and this concept makes sense to me although I don't know much about
it. I think they have the same issue as me. So I have to be very careful, in general it is all about
finding pacing and making sure I can manage the severity of herxing and make sure it doesn't spiral out of control. That year long detour was a one-time experience, in general I bounce back in a few days/week if I give the therapeutics a break.
I do notice that I slowly improve over time with meds that make me herx, but it is gradual. It isn't one massive herx and boom I feel better. Much more subtle. But I think it may be because I have immune system issues going on due to the pathogens. Makes my system respond like a tripwire.
And that's not meant to scare you, I think I'm on one end of the bell-curve and probably have specific side issues going on. But patients should be careful to make sure they control pacing and try not to continuously severely herx for months on end. That is a sign imo that treatment needs to be slowed up or dosed down.
And my "herx" responses are very fast, I tend to feel it 20-30 min after an effective therapeutic. I've always found that weird as most other people have much longer lag periods and again that could be due to specific immune system/pathogen issues I have going on.
Whether one should plow through or take a break is a personal judgement call that depends on the individual patient, their intuitions and tolerance levels. I wish I could have a better answer to that one.
