Hi Ashley Ann-
I'm sorry you're having GI ISSUES-
First - I know it's frustrating but your MD is 100% correct about
waiting to start tx until your GI heals. We take our tx orally so GI problems can prevent proper absorption of everything - including food and nutrition and meds.
Tx can be hard on the GI, making problems worse and maybe even damage even worse. And another key issue is that 70% of our immune system is the mucosal lining of our GI! And there is no tx that can heal us without the support of our immune system. So gut health is critical.
Also - 52 billion is a good dose, but maybe too high to start with. Your challenge is probably because your GI issues likely involve yeast/fungal overgrowth - it's very common but particularly with abx use. Your sx tell a y/f story.
The propbiotics are supposed to rebalance the gut biome, so the likely reason you're experiencing those sx is from yeast/fungal die off! So that's a very good thing (although a little confusing and uncomfortable) but necessary.
Another possible reason for the sx is that you're taking a product that has something in it you're sensitive to.
What I would do first if I were you is:
1. Keep taking it but reduce the amount you're taking and
2. You should always add a good gut detox binder when you're dealing with y/f overgrowth quicker, they can sometimes help improve bowel movements which is also key - to keep things moving. The binder is helpful to get the debris removed better after killing the y/f and it can also help prevent the y/f from establishing. Always use binders with 2-hr buffers before+after the binder (where you don't eat or take any meds or supps during this buffer time) and drink a lot of water all day long.
3. It's important to be on an antifungals Rx if you already have yeast/fungal overgrowth - natural antifungals won't work for most once the y/f is already prevalent. See the LAST POST in the "New to Lyme?" thread at the top of the page for important y/f tx info.
4. If steps 1-3 don't help in another 2 weeks or so, try a different brand - keep it high# of strains, fresh-refrigerated is best, start with low doses.
5. Diet is KEY - don't give the y/f anything to thrive on (sugars, simple carbs).
Hope this helps-
-p
