URGENT - Augmentin okay???

My "cold" didn't go away and started getting worse, so I went to the ENT just now and he prescribed Augmentin for a likely secondary bacterial infection. Is Augmentin okay for someone with Lyme, bart, babesia, erlichia, C. Pneumonia, mycoplasma pneumonia?

For some reason I think I remember reading in one of Buhner's books or somewhere that Augmentin with one of the infections could have very bad consequences but it may have been regarding acute vs. chronic infection. Anyone know about this?

My LLMD once prescribed Augmentin in combo with Zith and Mepron. Caused severe AAD and stopped. My PCP said it was probably the Clav portion of the blend that caused the reaction.

Let us know how you make out.

I don't see any problem taking it.

I took it last year after I got a bad cat bite that infected.

It didn't affect me adversely.

Just an FYI - I wouldn't necessarily follow Buhner with regard to abx - I have read a few bits by him that weren't accurate.

I don't think it's standard - I haven't seen it mentioned on hear or anyone I've personally talked to.

From the guidelines:


*Augmentin- Standard Augmentin cannot exceed three tablets daily due to the
clavulanate, thus is given with amoxicillin, so that the total dose of the amoxicillin component is as listed above for amoxicillin. This combination can be effective when Bb beta lactamase is felt to be significant.
*Augmentin XR 1000- This is a time-release formulation and thus is a better choice than standard Augmentin.
Dose- 1000 mg q 8 h, to 2000 mg q 12 h based on blood levels

I believe it's usually given to children with a classic bullseye rash.

According to the manual it shouldn't be taken for longer than 2 weeks. Probably due to toxicity of the clavulanic acid.
I saw someone on this forum took it for 6 weeks. I don't know if I could handle it that long.

For children, I usually see Amoxicillin alone - not the combo (Augmentin)

Actually for adults, as well - i usually see just Amoxicillin.

It was prescribed for me for an acute sinus infection. Bottle says Amocicillin and Clavulanate Potassium 875mg / 125 mg twice a day for 10 days. Precautions say to tell doctor especially of liver disease, kidney disease, and infectious mononucleosis. That's EBV right?

I'm worried. My liver enzymes were a little elevated right after Thanksgiving. Yesterday and today, I've had orange poo and some soreness in my lower back on both sides in the kidney area. I'm planning to take the first dose tonight. I hope it's not going to hurt me.

Also I just looked in Buhner's books to see if I could find any important information on it. I have chlamydia and mycoplasma pneumonia. I was thinking the Augmentin might at least knock those down some, but was bummed to see it's not effective on the pneumonias. I just hope this stuff helps more than it harms. Also warnings of c. diff on the Rx sheet.

Augmentin is what caused my ER trips, well, I guess lyme technically caused it, but it was my body's reaction to the augmentin, and what they called antibiotic caused hepatitis. it was just prior to being diagnosed with lyme. Mine was also prescribed to me for a sinus infection.

What symptoms did it cause that sent you to the ER? Did the hepatitis go away or was it permanent?

It was a combo of things. I almost fainted/had a racing heartrate and while I was in the ER they found out my liver enzymes were 10x normal. I was sent to a hepatologist who said augmentin can sometimes cause that to happen. Rare, but sometimes. I think it was actually the lyme. maybe a severe herx?? I read an article about such reactions in acute cases of lyme with augmentin. My liver enzymes returned to normal after a couple of weeks once I was off augmentin. Once I was diagnosed, I was on amox, cefdinir, doxy with no impact to my liver.

augmentin is direct choice with clari for lyme:
augmentin killing lyme wall of cells and killing EB of chlamydie

augmentin is best choice for treatment and it have to be in treatment scheme

dosing is = 1-0-1
