DNA testing companies "owning" your DNA?

So, a few of my friends have said they're afraid to do the DNAConnexions test because they don't want some random company owning their DNA. There is also this concern with the ancestry companies.

I don't even know. If a company "owns" your DNA, I'm assuming it's so they can test it, use it for whatever, etc. I mean, what's the worst they can use it for? Make a clone army? LOL. On the other hand, it's not like your DNA isn't spread out all over the world and all over your hairbrush. If a lab wants DNA, it's not hard to find. Of course, this may also fall into the spiritual consent area - that is, they don't want to consent to their essence being used without their permission. Let's think nefarious purposes...if a company owns your DNA, does that mean they technically have dominion over it? In a legal sense? Is it like signing your soul over to the devil?

Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Right now there are laws against health insurance discriminating based on genes. We all have some "bad" genes, and that does not mean they will be expressed some day (switched "on").

A company who "owns" your DNA does not have a patent or rights to it. For now it just lets them use it for further research. How do they know who "saw" / used your DNA first?- they dont.

I think the future holds more personal rights/freedom issues than some company knowing your DNA. Take "AI"- thats a threat. Driver-less cars are the first step to remove personal freedom, but city dwellers/hipsters and people who swallowed the "society pill" dont acknowledge this / are oblivious to it or don't care.

A car operating of GPS can purposely have travel / geographical operational limits. - As in, no longer driving out to the sticks, or down that minimally mapped BLM / forest road to your outdoor haven. I never have been and never will be a deep city dweller, so this concerns me.

The weirdest thing I've seen with these ancestry and /me data companies are the people who link it to social media. Some don't give a F about personal privacy or want everyone to know theirs for some reason?

Fact is, if the day comes that society / government want all this info on you along with your implanted chip......they will demand it, and you wont stop them unless you move to a remote part of the world. Glad I'm not twenty something.

I did my DNA through MyHeritage, and I'm awaiting the results of my DNAConnexions (backed up to 5-6 weeks for results). I'm glad I did both. I also have blood drawn at the doctor/lab for my annual physicals, and I have no idea what they do with my left over blood.

As far as concerns about insurance companies getting information about my health via DNA compaines, I don't believe these DNA companies would spend the extra time, money and energy to pull medical DNA out of my saliva or urine unless I paid for it. Well, maybe they would if I was a wanted person or something. LOL I'm sure you saw that murderer who was recently tracked down and captured because family members had their DNA done. I think that was pretty awesome.

Having said that, I have no idea what they do with my left over blood, pee and saliva. As long as I know what I need to know, regarding my Lyme infection, I couldn't care less what they do with it. I would do anything to know what's going on with my health.
