At ER with allergic reaction -- prednisone??

I had an allergic reaction to a medication this morning, complete with swollen lips and some trouble swallowing and breathing. The ER doctor wants to give me prednisone for 3 days. Thoughts?

Yes, take it. You need to control the allergic reaction right away or it can kill you. Once the allergic reaction goes away (usually within a day or two) you should be able to discontinue it. Taking Prednisone for only a couple of days should not affect your immune system that much.

You do need to take the prednisone for a short time.

What is the dosage?

BTW - was it Bactrim DS?

Hope it clears quickly, Dahlias....so sorry this has happened...

Well that is higher than I expected it to be.


That is actually quite a high dose from what I have read. (I have only read about the dose used in autoimmune diseases) BUT, it is short term and this must be what's prescribed for allergic reactions.

I've taken it before but I usually forget. I had a rash last time I took these two things -- last month -- but not this bad. I had forgotten about it when I took them last night. Pretty sure I've taken the GSE since then without reaction.

Just an update: I took the 60 mg prednisone at the ER and then had to take 20 mg next day and 60 the day after, because I was traveling and had neuro inflammation causing dizziness while driving. I ended up unable to drive home and had to take a bus and leave my car in another state. Still can't drive much. Not sure how much of that was due to inflammation from the allergic reaction vs. a Lyme flare from the prednisone. So far the flare isn't as bad as I feared -- I was really scared. Still waiting to see what happens.

Today I started having some of the same allergy symptoms though. I didn't take the medicine I thought caused the big reaction (only took my regular protocol), so I don't know why this is.

Sometimes allergies develop over time. I would stop your protocol and slowly add each item one by one until you find out what is causing it. Severe allergic reactions like what you had are to be taken very seriously.

Makes sense, thanks. I am taking it seriously for sure. Lots of allergies here but that was my first anaphylactic reaction and it's scary to join that club.

Dahlias - have you contacted the NP/PA at the clinic (J clinic)?

Just to fill them in...and ask their opinion?

Girlie, yes, I actually got a fast response from them the day this all started, and then asked some follow-up questions later. They said to take the prednisone in this case (though they normally advise against it), drop the diflucan and keep everything else the same. I'm about to start an off week, so I'm going to ignore it all for awhile and hope my body is settled down when it's time to start again.
