Ever survived a health crisis?

I recently just had a very rough health crisis from a bad reaction to a medication I received from the hospital. I learned a lot from the experience and I've decided to write an in depth article on my site for how to survive a health crisis.

I'm trying to poll others that have been through a health crisis themselves to pinpoint some common events that led to/triggered their health crisis and I want to get your input!

When I refer to health crisis I don't mean your typical disease/illness you already live with but a sudden turn of events that led to a debilitating turn in your health. We could say a crisis is constituted by being scared, uncertain of recovery, incapacited (or nearly), and experiencing pain/suffering that needs relief ASAP.

i.e I have chronic fatigue syndrome and IBS and was stable BUT when I took medication via ER doctor I had extreme unrelenting Reflux for days on end that I couldn't sleep/eat and rapidly lost weight and no drugs worked and I was fully incapacitated (though I got really lucky when I responded to an elemental diet of all things... phew crisis averted)

Thats just an example.

I'd like to hear your experience with having a "health crisis" and specifically what caused your downfall?

Was it a bad reaction to meds/supplements? Did you Dr. take you off a needed medication? Did you pick up a nasty pathogen/virus?

How did you survive through the worst of it until you got better?

Look forward to hearing your story and this info will be put to good use in helping other ppl w/ illnesses avoid the pitfalls that could lead to a health crisis!

How do you figure you caught the bronchitis? Sounds like a situation that may have been hard to readily avoid even if you tried. Were you on any medications at the time that lowered your immune system or anything? What could you have done to avoid this if anything?

Glad you found better help with Functional medicine. I too have had much more success with a functional medicine doctor when it comes to multifaceted complex illnesses. I saw a conventional Gastro Dr. the other day and his model was "go big on meds or go home"... I think I'll stick to my elemental diet thank you very much.

I had a health crisis brought on by my sodium levels in my blood falling much too low. I was on the Marshall protocol, and it was dumb of me not to realize that taking tons of medication that lowers your blood sodium levels would. .... well lower my sodium levels. It went on for way too long and I got very, very sick and lost a lot of weight, and the doctor I was going to didn't realize what was happening.

I finally went to the hospital, and I have to say that while hospitals are horrible at treating Lyme, they do a pretty decent job at treating electrolyte imbalances. Problem is, they gave me a whole bunch of medications I didn't need, and diagnosed me with a whole bunch of syndromes that I didn't have—so I ran around from one doctor to another for a while. After I got rid of the doctors by convincing them there wasn't anything wrong with me after all (I did feel better after stopping the meds they gave me), I went to a naturopath and starting treating with herbs.

It would have been helpful for a doctor to be keeping closer tabs on me, but all they did was tell me to eat more salt, which actually made things worse if anything, because I was really thirsty all the time, and eating more salt made things worse. I think the only way it would work is if I had some problem that caused my sodium and blood pressure to be too high (that's what Benicar is for). In other words I think that part of the Marshall Protocol needs to be taken with a grain of salt (at least figuratively).

The part that did help me is keeping my room and the house darker. I'm the kind of person that has trouble calming down, and I think keeping it dark made it a lot easier for me to rest and heal.

Chronic lyme itself is a "health crises".

Whatever is slightly wrong with your genes, has a greater chance of surfacing with lyme. Thats what it does in addition to taxing your immune system.

I sped to ER with a clot- I suspected what was happening though after a phone nurse consult, results of my gene test and how my mom became disabled.

Had I been out in the boonnies, or typical out of shape, non-health mined American, I could have died. Small hospital is 20 minute drive, 26 minutes if you dont ignore the three stop lights.

Waking up blind (different occasion) was almost more concerning, dont know what happened, but really felt death was near back then as other body systems seemed on the verge of shut down and thyroid med was not working at all, all hormones were a mess too.

I just snowshoed two miles in 2 ft of snow to my secret eagle nest viewing (tending the snowy nest). ............ life is better.
