Slow processing of speech anyone?

Wondering if anyone notices slow processing of speech as one of their cognitive symptoms.

I’m forever asking people to repeat themselves - like everything else I just thought I was getting old lol. A while ago I realized that it’s not a hearing issue as by the time I’ve said ‘what?’ I’ve actually figured out what they’ve said so I’m working on breaking that habit. I don’t watch a lot of TV but when I do I prefer to listen with closed captions on as I don’t have any issues then, I’m half reading half listening.

It’s a minor thing really, but like the vision issues (convergence insufficiency, focusing problems, which come and go), I’m wondering if this is something I might keep an eye on to improve if I ever clear my head problems (active infection? Ammonia? Mold? Who knows).

Oh yeah. Been that way for years now. Haven’t even turned 50 yet.

It can still be hearing related, and from what you said it probably is. There are different types of hearing loss, and it is often nerve related. It’s no wonder that Lyme/co and mold toxins can cause hearing loss as they are neurotoxic.

I recommend seeing a licensed audiologist for a complete hearing test. If you have never had one, it will be a baseline test for you.

I have been hearing impaired lifelong and wear hearing aids in both ears. I didn’t start wearing them until I was 30 except for 1 year as a child I wore an aid in one ear. I got by with lip reading and avoiding one-on-one conversation with people most of my life.

Get a complete eye exam, too. Make sure they check your optic nerve. For the past 3 years I had imaging scans done of my optic nerve. First year was abnormal. Second year (after almost a year of Lyme/co treatment) it was completely normal. This year (last month) was abnormal again (sigh), probably due to mold/toxin issues.

Doctors are completely clueless about the affects of neurotoxic inflammation on the body, as they know nothing about toxins in general.

I would advise getting good, solid, complete exams and imaging scans as baselines and following up later if you feel you have improved or worsened and compare to baseline values. Make your own notes about your symptoms and exposures around the times of your tests so you will know what you are comparing.

A lot of what I think of as cognitive issues seem to be attention deficit issues for me. I can process things fine, solve puzzles, do mental math, etc, just fine if I’m focused on a single thing. It’s when there are distractions it’s a problem.

Same here. I have a lot of ADD/OCD type symptoms. I suspect it’s related to hormone or neurotransmitter problems but I don’t know how to test/diagnose/treat.

I do have memory and cognitive issues but mine are different from my 81 year old mother’s. I guess different parts of our brains are affected.

I had a Neuroquant MRI a little over a year ago. It revealed some abnormalities related to mold and Lyme, so the cognitive stuff isn’t just my imagination. It’s real brain deficits.

I have that problem - processing what someone says quickly.

I know I’ve heard them because it just takes me a minute to process.

It seems to happen most with my husband ( not kidding) maybe because it seems to be worse in the morning when I first get out of bed.

I should get another eye exam - it’s been two or three years since I had one.
The Dr was good - she did the Visual Fields test and looked at the Optic nerve (I told her I had lyne disease)

I know what you mean about feeling defensive. It’s not a good feeling to feel that way pretty much any time you see a doctor.

I’m going through this now. After 17 years of Lyme disease and coinfections, I almost can’t believe that this didn’t happen sooner. I have very good hearing, but lately, if it’s people directly talking to me, I cannot translate their words into anything that makes sense audibly. I hear them talking, but my brain is like, WHAT!?

Even with my very supportive GP - I am defensive and hesitate to mention the word (lyme) because it’s still not understood and at this point she’s so good about agreeing with any testing I ask for - I still don’t want to push my luck.

I guess I have been like this for so long I didn’t realize it was a Lyme thing. Then again, I got (knowingly) sick 10 years ago.

I hate it when I meet new people and they introduce themselves telling their name and maybe where they’re from or something. Before they utter a word, I already know what they say will literally go in one ear and out the other even if I try to hear and listen. I wish I could hit the pause button until my brain and ears get ready and then play it on slow speed.
