I started randomly having severe anxiety last Monday. It led to reckless behaviors as a way to get relief from the anxiety. They put me on a beta blocker to help with the anxiety. The anxiety became bearable again, but then I started having severe depression. Is it possible to have depression with hyperthyroid? I know the anxiety was caused by it. The depression doesn't make sense. My theory is that my body is so depleted from being hyperthyroid for many months that my hormones are off, causing the depression. My ND said yesterday that I am low on a few vitamins and minerals from being hyperthyroid for so long. I'm so mad at both of my doctors for missing it all this time. What do I need to do? I dropped my thyroid meds from 120 mg to 75 mg NP Thyroid. I need relief, or I will end up in the hospital.

You have Hashimoto's and adrenal fatigue according to your signature, both of which cause hypothyroid issues and depression. I didn't realize it was possible to have Hashimoto's and adrenal fatigue but also hyperthyroid.

A beta blocker absolutely can make you feel depressed, stoned, out-of-it, depersonalized, and exhausted. What did the person who manages bipolar disorder have to say about all this? Perhaps a different approach to the anxiety would be in order if the beta blocker has you feeling so bad!

I haven’t seen the mental health doctor since the switch to the beta blocker. I am wondering if I need to just skip it tomorrow. I see that doctor next Wednesday. My thyroid has just been over medicated for several months. So that’s why it’s hyperthyroid.

I'm glad you can see the doctor soon. Sounds like you are in a miserable stretch!

If you can taper down the beta blocker, take a half-dose, etc. then that might be a good idea for now. Also, there are so many other treatment options for anxiety, I'm a little surprised that's what you were prescribed. Maybe your doctor will have some other ideas for you.

I called the doctor to see if i could go down on the beta blocker. i really think that could be what caused the depression.

"Betablocker" realy needs to be broklen down to other designations, as the different types actually work differently. So they can have different symptoms too.

Do you have your latest thyroid lab results?

astroman, it’s propranolol.
I have part of the thyroid panel. The doctor messed up and didn’t order ft3.

TSH .35 (.40-4.50)
FT4 .8 (.8-1.8)

So it’s confusing because both t4 and TSH are low.

I would request another test....you need FT3 tested at same time.

You are not hyper thyroid per the T4, which is more accurately tested than TSH. BUT...Since your on natural pig thyroid you NEED FT3 tested every time, as this will usually be higher than FT4.

Hypo thyoid causes depression AND anziety/hyperness in many peoople.

Propranerolol lowers anxiety via less cortisol output, thus lowers B that way. It does minimal to vien wall elasticity..
