It is just so obvious over the last two and half years that her neuro symptoms are caused by leaky gut. Her memory problems go back many years so there's no way to know how long it took to get this bad.

What's sad is that the practitioners I've taken her to are integrative doctors and a nurse. The integrative doctor told me she'd never seen leaky gut cause neuro symptoms like severe confusion.

I thought the gut was your "second" brain? If your gut is dis-functional then it makes sense that your brain is dis-functional.

I think I am basically going to have to try to fix this by feeding her the foods that don't cause reactions and hope that her gut eventually repairs itself. Her reactions aren't as bad as they were one year ago so I must be doing something right.

elemental diet does not have to mean chemicals. you make your own recipe.

I don't think I could come up with four days worth of recipes to blend and rotate. I've read that elemental diets work well but people don't stay on them because they are so difficult.

yes that is the thing they're extremely difficult. that is why they are a last resort. it is two weeks. it is just a sacrifice that needs to be made. you don't need a variety of recipes, just the one.

An intro elemental diet may be worth trying. Have you tried her on the GAPS intro diet?

I do not think she would tolerate a single elemental recipe as I've been rotating foods for a year. Eating the same thing over and over will generate a reaction.

No, we didn't try Gaps diet specifically. We rotate foods that she doesn't react to. There are hardly any foods left to eat so there's no way I can put her on a specific diet.

I wonder if you have looked into NAET as a tool for clearing some of your mother’s reactions in order to increase the selection of foods that she can eat and to reduce environmental triggers. You can find a practitioner through the website NAET.com, but will want to select the person within your driving range with the most comprehensive training resume. Practice and training really count here. This acupressure method looks like it could not possibly work and maybe this accounts for its near absence in the treatment portfolio of those suffering from multiple sensitivities. I have long personal experience with this method though and can testify unequivocally about both its effectiveness and its usefulness for those of us faced with these complex systemic problems.

I saw an NAET practitioner with advanced training, for two years, twice per week, and unfortunately saw no improvement. She also used infrared light therapy, acupuncture, reiki, kinesiology, homeopathy, and flower essences, so I really expected to notice some change! She really had a gift for the kinesiology and was a very cool person. Do you have any advice for how to know if a practitioner is a good match for you, if you are a good candidate for NAET, ways to make it more likely to work, etc.?

The practitioner should treat the person first for a set of twelve or so basic categories and only when those are cleared, move on to treating specific items that are causing symptoms. The efficacy should be obvious at that point if the person reacts clearly to a trigger because the reaction will vanish. It can be difficult to notice overall improvement when one is reacting to a great many triggers, but the resolving of individual items should be crystal clear. If it isn’t, or if the practitioner did not first clear the basics, then I would be very skeptical.

One other thing—when you look at the person’s training history on NAET.com, you want to see a long list of trainings, where the person is returning over and over again for courses over a number of years. Don’t judge by the name of his or her level of finished training, but rather by the quantity and number of years they have been practicing the technique.

Is she taking any medications for MCAS?

The diet for MCAS is complicated - at least for me. high/low histamine, Stabilizers, liberators, food prep, food storage,

She should probably go on a low oxlate diet. There is a great low ox FB group that has a lot of people with your mom's issues. Everything was ruined with one dose of abx. They are down to like 5 foods.

I ended up at a dietitian who was knowledgeable in all of the above (hard to find) and got a list of foods and then we worked on re-introducing things.

Looking at my initial list, the food choices are odd in that my only "safe" fruits are golden and red delicious apples (peeled), and bartlett pears. This was to remain low ox, histamine Salicylate

Cakegirl, I have a very similar story to your moms. I had surgery on my foot and took Tylenol with codeine...had severe stomach pain and I think it tore my stomach up. After the surgery my symptoms exploded and I think the Lyme that I contracted just before the surgery, took over when my immune system was dealing with the surgery. I tried to treat the Lyme with minocycline and developed MCAD. I have been unable to treat Lyme or detox mold toxins due to horrific flares to anything that has to do with the immune system or kills bacteria....e.g. magnesium, LDI, LDN, TADS adrenal support, Samento and all herbals would give me so much inflammation I would develop bone spurs. I am now taking ketotifen (6mg a day), and Gastrocrom (Sodium cromolyn 8 capsules) and they have allowed me to tolerate some supplements. I can now take B12, magnesium, activated charcoal, etc that I couldn't tolerate previously. I still introduce things slowly since I am still very sensitive. Now I am working on detoxing mold that I lived in for many years at my work place. I am interested in hearing how your mom is doing and if she found anything to help her.

dmw - you mention lyme - and i am not sure if you are using it in the colloquial catch all sense as a name for chronic illness - but just wanted to pass on that bartonella is associated with unusual bone growth and lesions much more so than lyme

in fact some LLMD's - eg Dr SP - believe bone growths are a very high confidence indicator of bartonella infection.

Thanks for your reply Garzie. Yes, I am sure I have Bartonella as well. I have a large indent in my forearm (loss of subcutaneous fat), lumps under the skin in my thighs that are sore when I press on them, rages when I herx, lots of eye issues, etc. I think Bartonella is also associated with MCAD as well.

I am not sure if this is something I picked up in Dominican. My symptoms started after a trip there and my foot was swollen and purple, and then exploded after surgery. Not sure but I think sand fleas are carrying Bartonella.
