Beyond any doubt, surgery can set you back with Lyme and co-infections, if not open you up to viruses, etc...
In June of 2016 I had an aortic valve replacement surgery. For the previous 1.5 years, I had gotten back to about 85% from Lyme. The trauma the surgery caused, cutting open the chest and pain that followed in shoulder from laying in a strained position during surgery for 4 hours, along with the lack of sleep that I experienced in the days following in the hospital and at home, was too much for the immune system.
Seems the weakened immune system let co-infections jump in much more, along with EBV. It has been more than 3 years since, and I still have not been able to get anywhere near where I was before the surgery. Before, I was coaching in college, traveling with team and recruiting. Also, I was able to eat a little bit more "junk" and not have repercussions from it.
Coached two more years before I finally had to give it up because of fatigue, fever, pain that I had not experienced before, etc....
So, at least in my mind, surgery can set you back. I have avoided even dental surgery or limited it since then, though that is not always possible in people's lives.
