I have no feedback about black pepper (although I think it's a good question!) but I have heard from multiple doctors to get curcumin via Meriva extract. It's more expensive, but a few brands offer the Meriva variety. Generally I prefer to take herbs in their full forms (not just with certain components extracted) but I heard the rec for Meriva enough that I've been doing what I'm told. ;)
