The Cytokine storm we experience when we herx is similar to what can happen with covid.
A proposed mechanism of action of atovaquone on COVID-19 is to interfere with the viral protease:
https://doi.org/10.26434/chemrxiv.12003930.v2Similarly for clarithromycin:
https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.04524The viral genome appears to encode several proteins that interfere with the immune response:
https://compsysbio.ornl.gov/covid-19/covid-19-structome/If you block the protease, then it cannot release these proteins. Then the immune response is not suppressed, and the immune system recognizes the virus, and... cytokine storm.
When I took clarithromycin, it seemed to provoke a stronger immune response than atovaquone. That may be beneficial for viral clearance, but it made me feel unwell.
I had also been taking minocycline around the time I got sick, but it had no apparent effect.
