Hi 1000Daisies,

From what I have read herbals can lose their potency after time depending on how old they are (which doesn't mean they are unsafe to take). I think the herbals that are based in alcohol "may" be just as powerful due to the alcohol base. I am one that doesn't pay attention to expiration dates (depending on what it is).

alcoholic tinctures are believed to last a long time if stored in the dark( light degraded most things ) but according to renowned herbalists like Stephen Buhner - the work to know for sure simply has not yet been done.

Tinctures are usually stored in airtight containers since they are liquids, so this keep the oxygen out - the other main degrading agent.

Powders and tablets are expected to degrade quicker due to their finely divided nature and therefore the chemicals in them are more easily accessed by oxygen in the air. The containers are also rarely fully airtight.

These are however only simple rules of thumb. In reality, some chemicals are inherently more easily degraded than others so it will vary from herb to herb.
