I'd also like to add another possibility:
It's possible that the mold lowered his immune system so much that the Lyme flourished. Or other infections for that matter. And moving out can be stressful too, so that might not have helped.
Your son's story, just from what I'm reading, is actually very closely related to my story.
I got really sick in an apartment with mold. That was how everything started for me. It got so bad that I couldn't breathe anymore and went to the ER multiple times because I physically couldn't breathe. I moved out but the damage was done. A few years after that, and many, many doctors, I found out I have Lyme disease.
In my case, the mold lowered my immune system so much that the Lyme came out to play. So I suspect I was carrying Lyme for longer than I'm aware off.
I also treated for mold recently, but in my case, that made no difference.
That is not to say that mold might not be his primary problem. It's just that everybody is different. Mold and Lyme are definitely related in several ways.
