1, weakness vs autoimmunity - both actually - not everyone will with lyme have a named auto-immune disease but all will have some form of immune dysregulation - and while your boy is fighting this you are typically more susceptible to getting more infections.
2, some people never get sick, some get sick with a fever or "summer flu" - and then quickly recover - some get sick and are ill for years - some never recover - its a spectrum. other factors like health status before the infection, other infections present in the person or the tick, environmental factors, genetics etc all play a part.
3, research has been lacking in the co-infections - lagging behind lyme - which was itself neglected. some groups have been researching bartonella in particular - Zang et al, Breschwerds et al, another group in France - i think Breischwerds and his group just got funding to do some treatment research on bartonella. i don't hear much on the other co-infections
Garzie,
Thanks for your reply. That bit about
some people never recovering really scares me. How prevalent is non-recovery, exactly?
One other question: is lyme complex ever actually fatal?
