saraeli- looks like you’ve done your research and you have it figured out as best as you can so far.
The North Central area on the west side of the great lakes has had a drought this summer until two weeks ago, then it rained like crazy and humidity skyrocketed along with rising temperatures. We have a nice little break from the mugginess right now though.
I have a good old black dirt all around my area so at least when it rains the dirt sucks it up versus sending it down into your basement walls. The basement, concrete block walls still gets condensation though, so I ended up running fans on them ,…this morning and they appear to be nice and dry.
I take apart my window, air conditioners every spring before installing them on my front sidewalk and clean them quite thoroughly. I put a plastic bag around the electrical panel while I’m doing this with the hose.
As you may have noticed all the newer conditioners have a foam divider between the inside, and the outside fans. It’s white and yes you can see black mold specs on it much more easily. The older ones had metal dividers and they did not get mold buildup on them in my experience. I have two old broken down window AC units in my basement and I just looked at them. They’re a little dusty but there’s no mold on the inside fan area time to take them apart and bring him to the metal scrap yard.
Luckily, I don’t seem to be affected by mold. I’ve never had vast amounts of it just little small areas, sometimes on the shower curtain which I clean with water down, bleach or vinegar and then on my AC vents.
Think I’m gonna go get a better AC unit today a GE 6000 BTU for my bedroom, versus the cheap under powered 5000 BTU (that doesn’t seem to remove humidity , or the ability to drain the humidity fast enough out the back.) so I’m hoping that a little more power which will allow a slower fan speed will evaporate the humidity better.
The little one that’s in my bedroom now, I got two summers ago on closeout for 50 bucks at Walmart so I can’t complain. The day prior my older all metal unit completely gave up it’s ghost. At the time it was the end of a long hot summer and everyone was sold out of the smaller AC units so this cheaper one from Walmart was sort of a Band-Aid until I got a better one.
Those movable floor, AC units that have a hose that go to a window seem to burn off humidity better. Thus that is also why that kind of cost a lot more to run (in addition to their odd design, but easy to install ) requires more energy. I have one of those in my living room. I used to completely close off my living room during the hottest weeks.
My family got central AC in our home growing up when I was about
12, that was really nice! To add that on and convert some of the simple ductwork in my basement, there’s probably about
10 grand. If I’m still living here once I’m officially old, I think I’ll get it done. Lugging around AC units is not on any old peoples list of priorities! But those portable movable floor mounted ones are pretty good for older people (or the younger injured ones amongst us) who don’t want to lift heavy stuff up and install things, so at least there is that option.
