Looking for help for my brother, suffers from Intestinal Migranes??

My younger brother is suffering from what one doctor called "intestinal migranes"? He has had this condition now for over three years where he will be fine for a week or so and then be ill (ie stomach issues, nausea, sensitivity to light) for upwards of 3-6 days!! It has gotten so bad that he has quit going to traditional school and is taking online classes. He should have graduated last year but because of his illness it is being delayed. Does anyone have any experience in this or any advise? <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

My 9yr old son has been diagnosed with amdominal migraines or some call

stomach migraines.  He hasn't even been able to go to school.  These episodes

can last 30 min - 2hrs.  He's nausea, pale, sweats, doesn't throw up but

coughs and gags.  Does anyone have any info on this type of migraines ?

This has been going on for 6 months.  He is on amitriptyline. Please help !!

Hi,

I am a PA in a Headache Center..abdominal migraines are common ailments and a pediatric neurologist would be the best person to manage this. Kids migraines are ususally much shorter than adults (about 2 hours).

Unfortunately these type of migraines don't respond to triptans (Imitrex etc) since Imitrex targets the nerves in the brain.

Kids DO respond to migraineurs lifestyle...go to bed and get up same time every day (yup weekends!) for six months to settle the nervous system down..migraine vitamins, of B2 and magnesium 200mg each, might help.  No skipping meals, no caffeine. period.

Good luck..and by the way..boys usually grow out of this, it's girls who carry most of the migraines to adult hood or convert to the headache type.

Hi Mary Beth

Thank You so much for answering !  We went to a neurologtist and my son had a eeg, which is

normal.  He has had every test under the sun.  He had a ulcer in Sept of 07,  after he broke arm

for the second time (long story.)  His ulcer was caused by a virus, which that triggered

IBS and so on.  I never had even heard of abdominal migraines.  He is actually being seen

by a doctor at a children's hospital he specializes in stomach problems in children. My son

is on Elavil.  Have you seen results with this drug ? It does seem to be helping him. 

He hasn't had a episode now for about 4 days.  He is in such severe pain bent over

double.  It is so heartbreaking.  He also takes levisin for the cramping as needed only.

what other drugs have you seen used ?  where exactly do you work ?

Wow......I have never heard the words intestinal migraines, please tell me more. My son suffers from migraines since he was 10 and diagnoised with ulcerative colitis which affects the intestinal tract. His olon was removed at 12 years old ( now 33 ) still my baby!!!! He has seen every dr. between Miami  and Jacksonville Fl. He had his last surgery dec. 1999 and has had a constant migraine ever since. Stomach gets upset , doesn't eat good, vomits, dehydrates the pain is so bad he has been marked diabled by the state of florida, sits at home in the dark rooms, can't get the mail or take the garbage out, depressed, taking to much meds from pain dr. and gp. Hospital emergency rm will not see him anymore like most dr's they say there's nothing left to do. he's had cat scans, MRI's, eeg's, stomach xrays etc....all thank God have been negative. I need to hear from people who deal with this, maybe someone knows of a real good dr that will take this special case and really try to find out the CAUSE their has to be CAUSE for the body to react so painfully, this has to be a warning for some avenue we have not covered. This is a terrible cycle he is going through. Please resond ......Mom needs to be able to help my child. Isn't that what we do for our children regardlesss of age or illness. Hi, I'm so sorry to here your son has had so many problems and has been in so much pain.

I cant totally understand.  When you said he has migraines, is that abdominal migraines ? or

or migraines in the head ?  My son is on Elavil and we ended up going to a children's hospital

near where we live.  His medication has had to be increased three times.  It seems like this

amount that he is on now is helping.  He has been in so much pain, he is now dealing with

alot of anxiety about returning to school.  What types of dr's has your son seen ?

Has he been on Elavil ?   Is he in pain all the time or does he have attacks of pain ?

I have also heard of abdominal epilepsy.   I hope this some how helps.  I will keep you and

him both in my prayers.
