I have chronic daily headaches that started out as occasional migraines. I now have what is called transformed migraine (chronic everyday headache.) I was on Depakote ER 1000 mg daily for a preventive which worked for many years, but I had "breakthrough pain" several months ago and slowly came off of it. (The only side effect I had was it made me very sleepy, but it was worth it to be pain free.) I didn't know that "breakthrough pain" can be treated. I then tried nerve blocks (cervical medial branch nerve block) administered by a pain specialist. This procedure was painful but some have said they hardly felt the injections. It only reduced the pain but not enough to allow real daily functioning and it also made the right side of my head where I have the pain very sore and tender (I can't sleep on that side.) My shoulders also get tired. Not everyone has this experience. I am now taking Neurontin but so far it hasn't helped. I may need to increase the dosage from 400 mg daily. If anyone has any success with this drug, please let me know. I am taking Excedrin but it's not good for long-term use. Radiofrequency Lesioning given by a pain specialist gives longer and better results than nerve blocks, but I am hesitant to try it. Good Luck
