anyone use self administered DHE?

I just went to the ER for the second time this week for a 3 week migraine.  I had gone asking for DHE by IV, and they had none..  I have never had this happen before.  I am thinking of asking my Neuro tomorrow for a prescription that I can give myself injections.  Do any of you do this at home?

I think that would be an excellent idea. I was given DHE to adminster at home and the only suggestion I have is to talk to your doctor about nausea -that is if you get sick when taking DHE! I used to get VERY nauseated and had to take Zofran a few minutes before taking DHE.

Its been a while since I have given myself a shot of DHE so I can't think of anything else, but I sure would ask.

I definitely agree with Sara. Although the DHE proided my relief from my migraines...and god me horribly horribly "flu-like" nauseated. I would definitely ask your doc for a nausea med to have on hand as well....good luck!!

So I go to the neurologist today for some DHE. She tells me that she has never prescribed it for anyone and it is an "old" drug that no one uses anymore. I explained that it was a life saver for me for several years. The triptans do not work for me. I need somtehing else.

She didn't refuse to prescribe it, but said she needed to google it and see what the dosage was and how I should administer it. That kind of scares me... my doctor is getting advice for medicine from GOOGLE!

I think I need a different neurologist.

called the neuro today to see if she had googled the dosage and she is now refusing to prescribe the one thing that has always helped me break a migraine. She upped my dosage of Neruontin to 1200 mg per day and started on another round of steroids. She also prescribed vicoden, but I did not fill it as I am on a contract with my pain management doctor and will not jeopardize that relationship because I could not function with my back pain.

I am looking for a new neurologist as we speak. I don't understand why she wouldn't prescribe the medicine. She said it was an "old Medicine" and that they didn't use it much. She also said she had NEVER used it but her old partner had once. She didn't like the side effects. Wonder if she looks at the side effects of all the other meds she writes for.... they almost all have scary and possible fatal side effects.

I feel like I have wasted the last 3 months with her.....

HI..........I feel for you and your frustration......sometimes the frustration alone I think is the main "trigger" for my headaches.

Don't look it as a waste of time...just look as it as a road you've taken and even though it lead you to a "dead end" just turn around and pursue another avenue.
Together we will find answers and help for these foresaken migraines.....I know they say "God doesn't give you more than you can handle"....but I look it more as "What doesn't kill me (these migraines) has made me stronger"....MUCH stronger!!

Hang in there!! Keep forging ahead....and know at the end of the day....you are your strongest advocate....and you can and WILL get better.
