Medication prescribed for daughters migraine

 Hi I was wondering if anyone has a teenager who has migraines. My 14 year old daughter has had a migraine since tues morning and has been prescribed 2 x 500mg of cocodomal 4 times per day and 1 x 50mg of diclofenac sodium 3 times per day. Her medication was increased to this dose today as her migraine pain was not alleviated after 24 hours on a smaller dose. it does finally seem to be kicking in after 40 hours and she says her pain relief is now down to a 5 out of 10 as opposed to a 10 out of 10 previously. I was wondering how long it would take for her migraine to go away and is it normal to be so sleepy and exhausted when experiencing a migraine. Sorry for rattling on anxious mother!!

its normal for me to not feel completely myself for as long as a week after a severe migraine.  I think a lot of people experience this :)  I have 3/5 days of migraine, then after the pain subsides and I am able to walk around I continue to feel pain in my eyes when looking at bright light or the pc screen for as long as a week after.  I also feel tired, very hungry, continue to have neck pain/jaw pain for that period too.  After about a week I start to feel completely back to normal until the next episode...!!

Hi, my daughter also has chronic daily headache and migraines. She has taken a number of medications, but I'm not familiar with the ones you listed. She has preventive medications as well as rescue meds. The preventives are not too wonderful for her - she has been on a number of them. She cannot take most rescue meds due to other medical problems. She ordinarily experiences a similar reduction in the worst pain within a few hours of taking rescue meds and taking a nap. They don't always work completely. Also some preventive meds can take weeks to start working.

It seems like the migraine itself can cause sort of a hangover effect, where she is still ill for a few days after the worst is over. The meds can add to this problem. Sometimes the aura lasts more than a week, and can be nearly as bad as the pain.

My only advice is that if she does not get relief, keep going back to a good neurologist. No single medicine is effective for everyone, we had to go through quite a few. There is not one right answer, or right medicine. Any doctor (and there are some) who acts as if they have done all they can should be replaced. There are also some vitamins called Migravent that may help.

I hope she feels better, and by the way, I don't think a mother who is anxious when her child is in such dibilitating pain need apologize. Do not tolerate anyone who calls you a worry wart or over anxious, etc. It is hard to watch your child suffer. Good thoughts for both you and your daughter.

Hi thanks for the above replies. It was reasuring that others have similar symptoms to my daughter as you do worry that it may not be migraines. My daughter is being referred to a neurologist and has been referred for a scan so hopefully we will have something that works more effectively in the future. She has also started preventative medication today so hopefuly it will work. Lonesome dove I can completely relate to the hangover effect as this is exactly what she is like she is completely washed out after a migraine that lasts for more than 24hrs and although the pain is completely gone she is still sensitive to light for a few days which sounds the same as what you have violet rose. Anyway thanks again

Hi, I'm 17 and suffer from migraines and have done since i was 10. My Doctor Has me on 25mg Amitriptyline and 0.5mg of Pizotifen a night to try and prevent the migraines, also i take Naproxen when i feel an attack coming on. Being young restricts us from taking alot of migraine prevention medication. I also end up feeling very washed out for a couple of days after a migraine best think to do is take it easy till she feels better again :)
Hope this helps and i hope she gets her migraines sorted out soon, i know what she's going through.

thank you for your comments. We live in scotland and My daughter is 14 years old. They medication wise, are classing her as an adult as such she is on the maximum adult dose for her migraines at the moment. She is on propananol for prevention and migraleve pink and yelow tabs, sumatriptan and diclofenac for her migraines. I have to admit I am unsure whether any of the medication is working. I am hoping when she has her appt at the hospital they will be able to clarify what triggers her migraines and will be able to offer medication that will alleviate the symptoms more effectively. I have to admit she feels like she has a disability at the moment as it is having such an impact on her life.

I was wondering if it is hormonal if there is a treatment they can give her until her hormones balance out with age.

Hi fairyworks,

does she take all these meds every day? The aim of preventative medication is to reduce migraine frequency, severity, and duration. So if preventative is chosen right, the need in abortive drugs should be decreased. Sumatriptan (like all triptans) is a very potent antimigraine drug. On the other hand, diclofenac is one of the most potent NSAIDs (following ketorolac). Does she really need both? Sometimes, NSAIDs are used as prophylactic agents, but they can lead to gastrointestinal problems if taken for a long time.

My daughter only started on migraine medication a few weeks ago is on 2 x 50mg propananol per day as a preventative was prescribed this 8 days ago. The other meds are for when she has a migraine. 

When a migraine starts and if it is painful I have to give her 2 pink migraleve and 1 sumatriptan. if she is still in pain two hours later I have to give her one sumatriptan and one diclofenac, if she is still in pain two hours later I have to cease the sumatriptan for this migraine attack as it should have worked by then and I have to give her two yellow migraleve tabs. After this it goes on a four hourly cycle if she is still in pain.She has up to a maximum of 8 migraleve and 3 diclofenac in a 24 hour period. This can continue for up to four days. I did query the medication and amounts with the doctor who assured me she was within appropriate limits.

I have been trying to learn about migraines which was how I found this site and have read a bit about the medication themselves having the potential to excacerbate a migraine and pain levels for people. What I have been trying to do is when the pain is excessive keep her on the higher dose but as the pain levels reduce reduce the migraleve to 1 yellow tab difficulty is that last two migraine attacks have been really painful. I dont think any parent wants there child pumped full of drugs and to be honest she has tried the sumatriptan with the last two migraines and they have not worked so do not see the point in her taking them again which I will discuss with her doctor.

I think at the moment it is trial and error and the medical proffesion  are trying to reduce her pain levels until she see's a specialist. Karen I dont know if she needs both sumatriptan and diclofenac, to be honest I was more worried with her being on propananol permanently at 14 years old and the fact it  is a beta blocker. I suppose what your query has shown me is that I havent a clue what my child is really being prescribed and I need to research this much more thoroughly so thank you for that.
