What is the oldest age that you hear of people still getting migraines? I am now almost 64 and have continued to have them all this time. At what age do they stop. I heard over the years that they are hormonel? At 64 I don't think I can have to many hormones left???

I am new to this site. I am to see my doctor tomorrow about taking Topamax. I have been on amatriptaline (elavil) for three years with good results, but lately they have not worked. I have been having migrains again and have been so tired. The higher the dose the more tired I am. I have been off all meds. for 2 weeks. This is what the doctor suggested. I have had so many headaches in the last 2 weeks I not sure it was a good idea to go off amatriptaline at all. I was also on Neurontin a few years ago until I started loosing my hair and couldn't get out of bed because I was so dizzy. I sure hope Tomamax will help. I hear so many different opinions. How much does Topamax cost?. We live in Canada and do not have RX insurance.

 A little history: I had headaches as a kid. My Mom cut my hair because the doctor said that was the reason. Remember this was in the 50's. This did not work and than I had ugly hair too. I stopped having headaches when I was in my 20's. Twenty years later I had my first migraine and I was so upset, I knew they were back. This was about the time I started "The Change".
The person I feel sorry for is my husband, as he goes through each one with me. I bless him everyday. Margie

My mom did the same thing when i was a kid. I had very long hair and assumed it was giving me headaches. But she also had migranes. She had then till the day she died, at 76yrs old. I dont think they ever go away, especially if they start when your a child.. My son also has inherited them from me. I was sure that my daughter would be the one, but nope, it was my son.  My son is on Topomax, and it seems to be helping him but they are expensive if you dont have insurance. Maybe you can get your doc to give you samples long en ough to see if they work.... Take Care:)

Thank you, I spoke to my doctor yesterday and he has a paient that is in his 80's. He said that his migraines are not as bad as they were, if that helps. I also started on Topamax yesterday. It was only $54.00 canadian for 60. I found out when I arrived home yesterday that I qualify for them at no cost. I guess our income is such that we qualify. At least the cost won't give me a headache. My grandson also has migraines. We are the only ones in a very large family that do.

I am praying that Topamax will be my answer. Everything seems to work for a while. Sometime the cure is worse that the ailement.

Be careful with the Topamax.  They usually start you out with low doses and increase them over a period of time.  My husband started to have hallucinations with the higher doses.

I also started to take Topamax and felt awful on them.  I was so sleepy and felt really depressed.  It could have been other hormonal changes.  Not sure if it was actually the Topamax.
