I am new and am looking for some help for my son.  He is 3 (almost 4 in March) and has recently been diagnosed with hemiplegic migraine.  He has had migraine problems since he was days old.  We thought he had epilepsy, was tested for stroke, menengitis (sp?) etc. until recently his neurologist put him on an antihistimine to prevent migraines.  He has been on it since Oct. and we are crossing our fingers but not holding our breath.  He has not had any episodes since Oct.  He has always been quite delayed and now goes to a special needs pre-school.  He has autistic tendancies as well.  Is there anyone out there who has any info.  I know that this is a relatively new thing doctors are looking into and finding out about.  Obviously our hope is that some day he'll grow out of it and somehow catch up..........

Hello bethuk. Thank you for the reply. You mention Jenny in your post. Who is Jenny? I am sorry that you have such a hard time. I can not imagine what you and others must go through. I have occasional migraines. Have had them since I was little but they are very rare thankfully. I am just trying to figure out everything I can for my son. So far he has not been able to communicate to me what is wrong or what he is feeling. Since he has been dealing with these since birth (I am assuming this is why) he is mentally handicapped. He has been through loads of testing and nothing shows up. Everything turns out "normal". I have noticed that several of you have mentioned codeine. This is interesting and new to me. Seems to be a common problem with migraines. Thankyou agian for your post and your help.

Hi dive mom, Sorry to hear about how your son has suffered. I have had migraine for over thirty years, and my sister had bad migraine between the ages of 8 till 21, and my 17 year old son was diagnosed with it 2 years ago. My sister has not had a migraine for around 30 years now, maybe I have made up the shortfall!!
I am a the Manager of a Pre-school and work with your sons age group, I have also worked closely with 3 different children with autism over the years and most recently a child with Aspergers.

Keep on keeping positive, you are doing a grand job and we are all here to support you as best we can, I wish I could offer some answers, but for myself knowing there is someone out there who understands what you are going through has been a real tonic for me. Will keep you and your son in my prayers take care Ann.

I am amazed at reading you ladies' stories and wonder if my poor little guy has been having migraines all along with the hemiplegic. As an infant he cried non stop for hours and hours and there was nothing we could do for him. When he has a hemiplegic episode it usually is seizure activity for 5-7 hours and then he goes into a como state that can last a couple of days up to a week. When he comes to, it then takes several days to get back which ever side of his body has been paralized. It changes from episode to episode. If it is the right side then he loses his eye sight and all mouth coordination (eating, drinking, talking, etc.) as well. If it is the left side of his body then he can still eat though his talking will be slurred. When he is in a "coma" state we have to feed him liquids through a tiny tube that fits between his teeth that will drain down the back of his throat. Otherwise he has to be hospitalized which he's been many times for dehydration. He also spikes incredibly high fevers through it all so we have to alternate the IB Prof. and Tylenol every 3-4 hours just to keep his temp. in the 102-103 range. There is a ton of throwing up through all of this process as well. As I stated earlier he has not been able to communicate to us yet what is going on. He is starting to speak now but a lot of his speech shows that he does not have a lot of comprehension and is just copying what he has heard. I'll check out the websites you have told me about. Thank you and thank you for taking the time to reply to my posts. My heart and prayers go out to all of you as well and the struggles you are going through.
