 I have had a migrane for two straight weeks.  I have been into the ER two times only to be sent home in as much pain as I arrived in.  I have followed up with my primary who change my anti-depressant from effexor which was supposed to work as a preventative to zoloft and put me on xanax for the anxiety the migrane is giving me. OHH and also sent me home with another bottle of vicodin.  I told my doc that the last bottle she gave me did nothing but eat my guts alive.  She told me to go home and take the vicodin as needed for "break threw pain"  If the shots are not working the vicodin sure as hell is not going to.  I have went threw the bottle in about two weeks and I have given myself breaks in there to make sure I was not suffering from rebound headaches.  I still have this headache.  I have a wonderful job that I feel like this headache is going to end up taking from me.  I do not know where to turn.  I feel like my doctor does not want to help me, I feel like she is giving up on me.  She has done test to try and find my cause but  she is giving up just like me!!!!! HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Wenmarie my heart goes out to you with what you are going through, I just wish I could wave a magic wand and make it better for you but I can't. But what I can do is empathise with what you are going through and encourage you not to give up, although I expect everything in you wants to do exactly that.

The trouble is with migraine it seems to have a mind of its own sometimes, and no matter what we do it keeps on coming back or refuses to go at all! - which I know full well is scary!! Tell me are you able to still work with this headache? Or does the migraine force you to stay home or in bed? When I am in a bad one I cannot function at all and the pain number is quite high too, and the longer it goes on the more I get stressed which promotes the headache - but I don't need to tell you that. It sounds like you need another professional opinion here maybe a Neuro who is a Migraine Specialist, I don't think your present Doc has ever had a Migraine or one that doesn't go or she would be more supportive. I do hope though the xanax and zolft help soon.

Hang in there Wenmarie, I will pray for you, especially that this present headache will realise that it is not wanted and gets lost lol!!! take care Ann x

OK, the biggest joke is that my doctor .....

1) supposedly suffers from MIGRAINES?!?!?!?  (on what planet)

2) refuses to prescribe ANY pain medication.....

?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Hey one of the neuros I saw a few years ago claimed he suffered from migraines and he made the biggest mess of my treatment when I come to think of it!! Mind you he claimed he had a certain amount of control over his in a 'mind over matter' sort of way - if you believe that lol!!! - I wish!!!

I know what a really bad migraine can mean.  Loss of comfort, loss of companionship, loss of income.  My worst has only been 7 days long but I turned tail and ran for the ER on day 5 for a shot.  100mg demerol and 50mg phenergan IM and it didn't break the attack until 40 hours later!  I have a new med now and so far (knock on wood!) I haven't had a full blown migraine.  It is called Frova.  It is pricey but it works for me.  My sympathy to anyone out there with one of the beast headaches.  chesswoman

some days I am able to work. I have used all my sick time at my job.  I am at risk of losing my job and I absolutley love where I work.  The last few times I have missed work I have had a doctors note to cover my butt but if my job wants to find a way to get rid of me they will. So, I have, for the past two weeks just been going to work and toughing it out and thank goodness my co-workers are compasionate and give me a break, the mostly let me mope around or sit in the office with the lights off.  I am finding it harder and harder to go to work though.  I have a hard time driving.  I am very dizzy with this headache.  I am actually getting scared.  This is the longest a migrane has ever  lasted.  I have had migranes my whole life. Well at least diagnosed for the past 22 years and I am 27 years old!!!  This has been a life long battle for me that I am begining to think I will never win!

I understand about your work as I do not have any allowance at any time for sick leave and I do not get paid for any day I have off, but also I have to replace myself with someone as I am the Manager of a Pre-school and the ratios of children to adults has to be spot on. Thankfully I am well supported by a good team, but I know that at the end of the day I am dispensable!!

Wenmarie it sounds like you need to see someone quite urgently who can get this sorted out for you. Here in the UK I would speak to the Neuro's Secretary and explain my predicament and ask if I could be fitted in as soon as possible, I don't know what the protocol is where you are, but would strongly suggest you go back to a Doc as soon as is possible, you cannot carry on as you are!! Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

eyes  Both of you guys need to look into the FMLA act.  If your employers have enough employees, they must comply with this.  While it doesn't compensate your pay, it does protect your job.  I had one for my IBS and it covered 36 days a year.  It saved my job often.  chesswoman

wish i could send you a massage. migraine is terrible and they really aren't well understood. i posted my migraine battle and maybe some of my strategies will work for you. if it doesn't subside please go to the er and have someone advocate for you! i cannot speak/think clearly when i am in that state.

people who don't get them or haven't had someone close suffer them tend to dismiss them as psycho-somatic- they think- i get headaches all the time- what is the big deal?

please find a new doctor- ask people you know who get migraine who they go to. hang in there.

I have heard stories about migraines lasting 2 weeks or longer, but I haven't had one last more than 2-3 days. What has worked for me is getting the toxins out of my home. I did some research and found out that toxic chemicals found in everyday products like personal care, cosmetics, and cleaning products can cause migrains and other health issues. I got the toxins out of my house and got on a daily vitamin pack and have been mirgaine free for 3 months. It may not be the quickest option switching out your products to safer ones and the vitamin pack, but if you want more info I can get that for you. Let me know how this situation turns out!

Stop taking the Vicoden! Vicoden (sp) GIVES me migraines. My neurologist hospitalized me for a migraine that last 5 WEEKS and there is a treatment they do in the hospital to get rid of the migraine. I forget what the medicine they use is called, but if you google migraines and hospitalization it should tell you.

You are probably getting rebound migraines. If you can, and I know this is HARD, STOP taking all your medication and sometimes that does the trick. You shouldn't take anything for more than two or three days without a break from the medication. I know this is hard, but it really does work.

If you go back to the ER, ask them to give you something along the lines of valium, along with whatever else they are giving you for pain. I've found that if I can relax enough and SLEEP and sleep and sleep, that will often get rid of the thing.

Hang in there, and really, really, try not to take any drugs for a few days and see if that will end it. Trust me, I have had migraines for over 30 years, and rebounds are usually what cause them to last so long.

My heart goes out to you as does my sympathy.  I have now had a continuous migraine for 3 weeks now and my doctors have given up.  I have to wait until the 2nd week of May for a specialist to see me in another state.  Please read my thread, if you want...I may be one that knows what you are going through and maybe we can help each other through this.  I really could use someone who understands, my husband tries so hard but I know he is more frustrated then I am, we are newlyweds and this is no way to start a marriage!!

kelly- great advice- SLEEP, and SLEEP and SLEEP! i hadn't thought about asking for something to help me sleep. that makes perfect sense. if i catch early and get in my dark as a cave bedroom with and ice pack and otc, then i can sometimes get rid of it without using a perscription pill- which is VERY expensive!! i am always afraid to take that last one in an rx incase i get hit with bigger one and am out!

wen, tl- i am praying for you both! i cannot imagine going that long without chopping my head off! when mine were at their worst, i'd get 4 or 5 a month lasting 2-3 days- 4 at the most! i am thinking and hoping that it breaks. so sorry you are suffering so much.
