Hi, Im not new here, but im usually in the a/p or depression forums, but i have had migraines since i was about 13. Im 38 now, and they seem to be getting worse and more frequent. It seems there are two kinds, but they are both debilitating. One type, is in my temples, and i have tried so many things over the years, but what i have found helpful, doesnt work 100% of the time. The ones ive had more frequently lately are in the back of my head, on the right side right above my neck. These seem more severe and last longer, sometimes 5 days or so, it messes up my vision and its hard to have any light at all around me, im sick of being in the dark lol.  Does anyone else have these different kinds? I have always been so used to having them, that i have not looked into it much, but any information would be helpful. Thank you

Hi Shell,

Can I ask what you take for your migraine? and what meds you are on for A/P etc as particularly some abortive meds can screw things up for migraine sufferers? My migraines have got worse as I have got older - am 52 now! I too have some A/P which can also affect the migraines - complicated isn't it?

Do you take any meds that have codeine in them? Codeine is a prime example of what I mean, to explain I developed chronic daily headache for a while because I was having to take more and more painkilllers (containing codeine) to just be able to function to get to work etc Codeine is a narcotic and addictive. It only affects migraine sufferers but frequent use of painkillers messes up our body's ability to deal with pain. This in turn produces more headaches!!! I took me donkeys years to find this out

Have you seen a Neurologist for your migraines? Do you keep a diary of the headaches - it can be quite useful to do this to give the doctors some evidence of what you are sufferering.

Hiya ann, thank you for your reply.

Right now he gave me something called, Phrenilin, i was on midrin before, but it didnt help much, i would hurt so bad i would have to take like 6 of them before i got any relief, and by then i had muscle spasms in my legs and back from to much meds. We have tried fiorinol, but it had to much caffiene (and codeine) in it, and thats it lol all the good meds with the caffiene kick in the panic mode, so i cant take those. Its frustrating. This med is pretty much the same as fiorinol, but i took out the codiene and caffiene. But it doenst help much either.
The other meds i take are: klonopin, wellbutrin and Ziac (which i know is for high blood pressure, but i take it as a beta blocker for heart palps, it helps a bunch with the arrythmia) I love my doc, and i know he cares, but hes in a lil bitty town in oklahoma, and im just not sure he knows enough. I havent seen a neurologist, but i sure need to. And, i used to keep a diary of things, ill have to start over, i moved and lost the book i had written in (or the ex got it who knows, hes wierd)  I thank you, it does help and thanks for your time, please let me know what you think of the medicine he has me on, as i have no idea what all is out there that may work around the panic attacks. Hi Shell,

Phrenilin has got a barbiturate in it just as Midrin has - both are prescribed for tension headache, and both could be habit forming! I think sometimes the Docs think that cos you have A/P it's a tension headache, while that could be true they need to consider other headaches such as migraine.

Well done for doing a headache diary before, when you start it again note down the length of attacks and the time of day, and where the pain is and any associated symptoms, also the strength of the pain. For instance on a scale of 1 -10, ten being the worst pain you could imagine! Also the medication you take and date and time - it might be useful to note down any side effects.

Look these drugs up yourself on the net, get yourself fully informed! I still think you need to see a Neurologist! By the way caffeine doesn't do my A/P any good either!!! lol

Hiya, thank you so much, i dont feel quite so crazy, and yeah, my doc doesnt seem bothered with giving me things that are addictive lol such as klonopin for a/p and those for headaches. When i asked about the worry of addiction to things, he said, well worry about that when if it happens, but sheesh. If i ever do quit having panic attacks, i pray that i can stop the klonopin. The barbituates, same way i guess. hes more worried bout the symptoms than the meds. I love my doc, but that doesnt mean they are always right. Thank you, i will start another journal.....i could use it for the a/p also and maybe see if theres anything that triggers those, although i never could find any certain thing (besides driving lol) that caused those yet either.
I think maybe the ones in the back of my head are tension headaches, but arent the ones in the temple different??? but then again, if they were tension headaches those meds should work better than they do. sorry i should know but......i do appreciate your help, your wonderful ;)

Hi Shell,

I know you will do the sensible thing. I had been asking my GP and different Neuro's that I had seen about the painkillers with codeine in for years!!! - They all said don't worry about it, you obviously need them!! - what!! - I only needed them cos I had gotten myself into a vicious circle with them and the more I took the more I needed them. It was my sister pointing out a documentary about this that started me thinking and doing something about it myself!!!

Hi ann, it is a vicious cycle isnt it? i went back to doc yesturday, but he didnt seem to listen about changing the meds, he refilled the phrenelin, and upped my dosage of wellbutrin??? i dunno, maybe a new doc would be better, and yes i would like to see a neurologist, when i can afford one ;) i like my doc and would hate to switch since he knows so much about me, but......i could get better help somewhere else im thinking. I hope all is well with you, thank you for all of your input and help, i really appreciate it, this place keeps me from feeling so alone.

Hi all...I am new here.  Had headaches for years and always took Fiorcet/cod.  Now I have a new doc.  He doesnt like to give it to me.  Today he gave me Topamax, but it looks scarey to try.  I hate trying new drugs, but I think I realize the whole rebound thing with the Fiorcet/cod. and need to stop depending on it.  I have a bad neck and back and sometimes I take the drug for those too.  Today he also gave me Acuflex which is really just tylenol and an antihistamin....but its for pain.  I tired that...no big deal.  Has anyone heard of the Topamax and tried it?  Or the Acuflex?  I'm 52 and have always been active....just got married for the second time too.  confused

Hi Jen,

I'm not on Topomax at the moment.  It is frequently used to treat migraines but originally used as an anti-epileptic medication.  I've heard some good feedback on it.  I'm sure you'll get quite a few reply postings on this to set you mind at ease. 

Topomax will be my next medication if/when my propanolol doesn't work.  Took me way too long to figure out the rebound headaches too.

Thank you for the information hopeforme, i pray your headache will go away soon, i feel for ya, and will check out the flonase. Jen, ive never been on topomax, but good luck, i know its hard and scarey to take a new med. Congrats on your marriage!! i wish you the best.

Thank you Shell and Ladybug....for writing in reply to my headaches and the new drug, Topamax.  I still never tried it.  Its been a while since I visited this site again.  And I was happy to see you two and the info you shared with me.  I have been just taking the Fiorcet again.  But I am being very careful.  My headaches haven't been too frequent to try that med, Topamax so I told my pharmacist...If it aint broke dont fix it....you know that phrase?....I told him the doc doesnt want to give me my ole med and is trying all these other things....including Toprol this past winter.  Bottom line...I am 52 and I know my body.  I just have to be careful not to take the Fiorcet for aches and pains.  I was recently tested for Lyme disease and Rumatoid Arthritis and thankfully both tests were negative.  I've been taking Aleve for my sore foot and so far thats helped, except my skin on my hands is bad.  I've had excema my whole life and although its under control, certain meds and foods can stimulate it....and its been bad right where I wear my wedding rings.  Well...its late....gotta get some sleep.
