Hi Noelygirl,
Ive had severe chronic cluster migraines since I was 31. I am a 64 yr.old woman. I would get 2 or 3 headaches every 2 or 3 days. Over the years, the effects have changed. In my 30s, I had a hard time even talking when I was having one.
With time, it improved. I couldnt think straight to get words out. After an episode, I felt euphoric and tired that lasted over 24 hrs. I think it has a lot to do with the part of the brain that's affected.
I was always told that they would go away when I was about 55. They didnt. But last month, I took some Hoodia for appetite control(over the counter) and after a few days, I noticed I hadnt had a migraine. I stopped taking the Hoodia and they came back with a vengence. I started taking it again and I havent had one since. That was a month ago.
Things that helped.
Knowing the TYPE of migraine. You can find out at the National Headache Foundation.com.
OXYGEN was a lifesaver, literally. 2 or 3 hits and it would go away but it had to be taken immediately and it's only effective for about 30% of migraine sufferers. I tried it in the middle of a killer headache at the Dr.'s office. He gave me an Rx and I bought a tank and had to fill it about every two weeks, but it beat taking Imitrex.
LOG FOODS -I noticed nitrites, legumes and for some reason, Kentucky Fried chicken would give me an attack. I cant even smell liquer, especially wine. Food sensitivity varies with different people.
EXERCISE/SLEEP I noticed that 8 or so hours after strenuous exercise I would get an attack.
If I got too little or too much sleep. Overly hungry too would trigger, 8 hours later.
I wish I had logged earlier and maybe I could have prevented more.
One other thing, emotionally, I noticed when someone else truly touched my heart, it would stop the headache. Very hard to create on your own, but maybe something to be developed.
I hope my experiences will short cut your path to relief. and good luck!
