Lyrica for migraines?

My neuro has prescribed me this. I have been on it for about 3 weeks now and am not feeling any better. I still have 2-3 migraines a week. He must be prescribing if off-label because it's not approved for migraines, that I have seen. I asked the nurse what it was for and she said they use it for pain. What?!?

Has anyone else been prescribed this? I can't find anything online regarding Lyrica and migraines.

Anyone? It is so frustrating to be on a med (off label especially) that is so new that alot of people probably have never heard of it.

My doctor also has put me on Lyrica for my chronic migraines. It has only been a week, but I feel better than I have
in years. My migraines have been daily. I have been waking up with a migraine almost every morning for ever.
I hope this continues, if it does Lyrica is a miracle for me.

Oh, I hope that it works for you!! It is so nice to meet someone that is on it for the same reason. I have been scouring the internet for just that.

The one good thing: decreased anxiety.

Just a quick note...

Topamax was used "off-label" for a long time before they approved it for migraine prevention. This may be something they will eventually do with this drug too if it looks like it is working well for a lot of people.

Hang in there and stick with it, most medications take a while to get completely into your system before you will see the full effects.

I have been on Lyrica for a week. I take 50 mg three times a day for migraine. This is the best result from a medication I have ever had. I have tried everything for my headaches - all the triptans, depakote, topamax - you name it!!!! I have my fingers crossed. My insurance does not cover Lyrica so that is my next hurdle. Any suggestions out there?

Hi, When talking with my physical therepist about my migraines she told me that Lyrica was just recently approved for the treatment of migraines. My friend who also suffers from migraines was on it for pain and her doctor took her off of it but I guess yesterday they told her that it could help with her migraines. I dont know if my doctor will want to try it because I was on Topamax which is no longer working for the treatment of my migraines and I know that we are at the end of the rope for what we can try to control mine. In two months I had been on almost every medication they could put me on. I had a migraine for a month and a half and couldnt get it broke even with going to the ER.

Has anyone experienced weight gain since they have been on Lyrica. I know that it is a side effect.

Weight gain? yes, but I had a thyroidectomy so I have a problem keeping the weight down anyway. Ialso have fibromyalgia and since taking Lyrica my pain is less, I sleep better and don't wake up at 4 a.m. with a migraine. I still have headaches, just not so severe. I was experiencing 10 to 15 migraines a month. YOGA helps a lot. I take 100 mg of Lyrica about 7 or 8 in the evening.

I have been on Lyrica for about a month. I haven't found it to work yet. I will say that the severity of my headaches may be better. And I sleep better but I have to take them all at night (3 75mg.) because they make me so fatigued during the day. Once, I took them and I felt numb all over, and really off balance. Thats why i take them all at night. Lyrica is so much better for weight gain for me, than neurontin and others. but I'm not really hungry a lot, but crave sweets, not good for weight. Hope it works for you. Honestly, while reviewing your meds. i'm afraid your on too much meds. I not we migraine sufferers don't want to hear that, but its a lot. I was diagnosed with BP2 but we have found that to be an inpulse dianoses that isn't correct. When I was on the meds. for it, my migraines were worse than ever. Getting off the meds was the best thing for me. I think that treating with so many addictive, headache causing meds it bad. look at your med info and i can almost bet headache is a major side effect. I'm not saying that your migraines will just go away with less meds, because mine have not, but they are better than when I was on all those types of meds. and seroquel liked to kill me. I had bad GI problems, passing out a lot, sleepy all the time, and I felt more crazy on it. It did help me sleep but it wasn't worth it. Just some ideas. i do understand you needing most of the meds. Have you ever tried Klonopin rather than Xanex. Its less addictive but just as effective, with less side effects. That med also helped my headaches some. I took a couple of wafers with a headache and it helped it not progress to a migraine(sometimes). I hope things get better for you fast. AngMichelle

ps. Do they let you give blood with the meds your on. I tried to give plasma ( for a little extra cash) and they said I could't because i was on medications. Just wondering. Have a good day!! and thanks for giving blood, it saves lifes and that is amazing that we are able to help so much, with so little.

I recently began Lyrica for migraines ( 3 days ago) because everything else that had been prescribed, I was allergic to.  My neurologist wants to try this for one month to "calm my brain down" because of the frequency of migraines.

I have been on Lyrica for almost a month for my migraines and it's working great.  I was previously on Topamax which only gave me short-term relief.  It would work for about 2 weeks and then stop.  My appetite has increased but that could also be attributed to going off the Topamax, which depressed my appetite.  I do seem to be having some GI problems on Lyrica which could be an issue since I also have ulcerative colitis.  I was getting migraines almost every day which handicapped me, so I'm hopeful that the Lyrica will be my savior and not interfere with my preexisting condition. :-)

I am now trying to get off of this med. I started it in Dec '05 and we gave it 5 months to work on my migraines and it didn't. I was on 300mg/day at that time. I am now at 50mg/day and having a really hard time dropping any lower. It is similar to withdrawal from Paxil for me.

Anyone know of anyone else that has had problems getting off of it?

i did try Lyrica during a very stressful time and it seemed to make me extremely anxious - and 'revved up' - i had to stop it only after a few days of use.  has anyone else heard of it causing anxiety?

i am considering trying it again - only because nothing else has worked for me so far - topomax, depakote, nortriptelyne - any advice?

I have had outstanding relief from Hoodia, an over the counter diet aid. Read my story on the forum.I'm not selling anything or have any interest in the product.

Hey guys,

I've been on Lyrica for about a month now, prescribed my pain clinic doctor.  I take 100mg am and 50mg pm.  So far it hasn't done a darn thing.  Same story, different day.  It's been so long since I've had a decent preventative, I can't stand it, and I'm sick of having to go to the ER for a pain shot once a week.  Maybe it just takes longer to get into my system.  I hope so.

rule #1 from my neuro NO MORE THAN 2 OF ANY MEDICATIONS FOR PAIN A WEEK. OTC,PRESCRIPRIO,ANYTHING. (LIKE 2 ULTRAM, 2 TYLONOL, A SHOT, ANYHING)
i too was getting a shot (nubain/phenergan) about once a week for my migraines and I think that was half my problem. yes, I have "Complicated Migraines" and they weren't all rebounds but it didn't help to be getting that much pain meds. I only tell you this because I was there and have to try to not get so many shot myself. Good luck to you.

I found this forum while searching the net for more information about Lyrica. The first site I came across was an attourney who is currently taking cases of people who have suffered severe side effects from Lyrica.  One of which was suicide. Which is why I thought it neccessary to bring it to your attention. I've been Lyrica for migraine prevention for over two months now, and it's been working quite well. The only side effect I've noticed (which I guess could be caused by anything) I've been experiencing a lot more aura activity in my peripheral vision and I'm wondering if anyone else feels the same way. But the big reason I was on the net today, looking for more info. on Lyrica, was that I've had a very emotional and grumpy day today, brought on by virtually nothing. But I've spent the whole day feeling out of control upset and even smashed an heirloom plate on the kitchen floor that meant a lot to me. That scared me.... hence the research. And then the first thing I fnd is that Lyrica causes anxiety and, in some cases, can lead to suicidal thoughts. If anyone would like to comment on their own experiences with Lyrica, that would be helpful. Thanks!

my nero just started me on lyrica too started it last night im also on topamax.whats even funny is all these  are sapose to be good for my by-polar and anxity too..which i find to be so weird but just like we all should know be carefull with all meds. that we take i hope these do work i m tired of pain.best of luck to all of you yeah

I JUST STARTED LYRICA  A MONTH AND 1/2 AGO, MAYBE SOME IMPROVEMENT?

MY NEUROLOGIST HAS TAKEN ME OFF ALL OTHER MEDS INCLUDING ADVIL ETC SO THINGS HAVE BEEN A LITTLE ROUGH

WHO KNOWS MAYBE IT WILL WORK. I DO TAKE MAGNESIUM AND VIT B 2. HE WANTED ALL OTHER DRUGS OUT OF MY SYSTEM AND HE WANTED NO REBOUND HEADACHE, SO I JUST HAVE A HEADACHEWITH NO REBOUND!! O WELL WE WILL SEE HOW IT GOES AND THEN MOVE ON TO SOMETHING ELSE IF IT DOES NOT WORK!!

I AM AN RN SO MY DOC DOES LISTEN TO ME AND WE COME UP WITH NEW PLANS TOGETHER

Welcome to Healing Well. Sorry it has been rough for you, but once your system has been clear of meds for a while the headaches should slow down a bit - glad you have got a Doc who will listen.

Sorry about the caps, would not let me change, some keys get stuck on the keyboard and I was in no mood to fight the machine.

I know lyrica can make you sleepy etc but it keeps me awake, so I have not been getting a lot of sleep, but if it works to decrease frequency or severity I can deal with the sleep issue.  thanks

For what it's worth, here were my experiences with taking lyrica to treat migraines...
For the first few weeks, I had a lot of trouble sleeping. I had a lot of extra energy. After a few weeks, though, I went back to a normal sleeping pattern and everything was fine. I haven't had any other side effects with the lyrica, and after taking it for a few weeks, I went from having 3-4 migraines a week to having 1-2 a month. It really has helped me a lot. (This is after having tried about 20+ other meds over the past few years to help treat the headaches).

Bottom line is, different things work for different people, and for me, the thing that works happens to be lyrica. I consider myself very lucky, and I hope everyone else here success in finding something that works for them.
