Migraine getting the best of me....

Oh, sounds like a bad one- I know those days...I gathered from your post it is the same migraine for the last four days. If it is, there is a condition called status migranious where the same migraine persists more than 72 hours and requires medical attention to break the cycle...Which from your post you have already done once, but sometimes needs even more medical attention...This is how I was taught--if anyone else has been told differently they will jump in and share ...

I had this condition awhile back and have been hospitalized for it for 5/6 days. There are risks associated with long sticking migraines and that is why it needs to be broken and I'm sure you know how that goes...

Sometimes, when it sticks around my doc has done "bursts of steriods" which can be just enough to give the migraine a kick in the butt to break up..

When I was hospitalized they did IV DHE. It's a rough med, but it worked. You need to take an anti-nausea med (I think it was an hour before), and it collapsed most of my veins--they weren't able to get a pic line in me....I took numerous other meds, but I'll be honest with you, I don't remember the majority of them... (I can't remember the number of days into migraine, but I had already done burst of steriods and had several other issues w/ this)...I think I've read this med can be given in ER or some clinics on more immediate/short term basis then what I needed...

The nice added bonus during my stays is I got to go to classes and that is where I learned alot about headaches and treatments and all the differents medications and stuff out there!

I would check back in with your doctor and see what he/she says if it is still around today and see if there is anything else they can do for you....

I hope that by now your migraine has gone away! I've tried everything under the sun and I'm still dealing with mine. Doesn't help that my boyfriend is playin rough with the dog and making him bark... loud. Anyway, I've never tried the steroids but after one long period of migraines, I think it was 5 days, and many different things, they tried a shot of Torradol. I've had it before but it finally did the trick.

First day I took the (oral) Imitrex
Same thing second day
Same third
Skipped because of fear maybe I was giving a rebound the fourth day
Fifth day went to hospital and had two doses of an intraveinous drug (didn't work that time)
And finally (same day) they gave the shot of Torradol and prescribed Loratab and sent me on my merry drugged out way home to sleep it off.

Luckily that worked. I'm not quite sure what kind of drug Torradol is but you could look it up, but its a shot given in your buttocks. Yay. I'm sure sometimes many different things can work, but that one time that is what worked. Right now I'm dealing with what I'm going to write off as a hormonally driven migraine since I started my Topamax a week ago and hadn't had one since... until yesterday.

So I ended up taking two doses of Imitrex yesterday with the worst of the migraine so far but they didn't work. Took a Loratab to put me to sleep and MAYBE (crossed my fingers) take it away last night. Nope. Woke up this morning with it lighter, just not gone. So now its going on two days with meds. HOPING I don't have to go to the doc tomorrow. Definitely tired of it.

Let me know what you ended up doing seechell... I think we're all hoping to find something. Imitrex is just not doing it for me. And as I'm not scared of needles, I'm not fond of getting 3-5 shots a month. :(

Also, I don't have to go to the doc... migraine finally went away on its own :) I'm patient with it since I'm able to be home and relax. But I'm sure if I were working or in school at the moment I woulda been in there!

have you ever had the IV drug DHE-45. Its suppose to be good for breaking a long migraine. Warning though, it does cause great nausea so make sure they give you something like phenergan about 20 min before the DHE. For some people it works great. They also have a nose spray form you can use at home called Migranol, and I even had shots to give myself at home, but the nausea was awefull and it only helped sometimes, but i've heard of it being a mirale drug for some.

I'm sorry the stadol didn't work for you, that usually works for me. Next time you get a shot, if they dont' diss you for asking for a specfic drug, ask about Nubain. It works great for me most of the time and doesn't have the rebound effect quite as bad as stadol.

I am still dealing with the same migraine. It seems to come and go, intensity wise. Sometimes it's managable and sometimes it's not. Right now, I'm in a not phase again. I'm on inderal la for migraine prevention but it's not working. I'm still doing my usual regimen and growing very weary of this. I want to go to the ER and see if they can help. I read a post from someone (sorry, can't remember who) about DHE? What is that and does it work? I really am down to my last nerve with this. I'm nauseated, light hurts and I just want to lie down and sleep it off. But that hasn't worked either. Any suggestions? Please?

I'm sorry that you are still dealing with this. Are you feeling any better, or did you end up heading to the ER doc? I've had IV DHE, but never used the kind AngMichelle talked about that can be prescribed for at home use...

I don't know a whole lot about the other kinds of DHE besides the IV DHE, and it is very rough on the body, but it worked for me. As Ann said, it is definently something you need to discuss with your doctor. You need to take anti-nausea meds before taking it, and it collapsed every vein that I had doses of it in, so you can only imagine--the bruises--since I take a high dose of aspirin!! I had some other side effects from it, but I was also pretty out of it for a couple of days, due to pain medication, pain, etc...It did work though, but it is something to definently find out all the details about...

If you are still miserable, which it sounds like you are, I really would go get it checked out & see what they can do..Take Care!
