Welcome to the Migraine board. Your description of you pain symptoms was excellent, just as if I had written it by myself. I doubt seriously if your sinuses are actually involved (allergy wise), as migraine pain generally covers one side of you head or the other. The pain in your jaw, probably TMJ, is a major trigger for me. The pain behind my right eye feels like an ice pick was stuck in it. By the way, how often do you get these headaches?
When you get the attack, are you nauseous or do you vomit? Are you sensitive to light or sound? These are very common with migraines. I get them all with my attacks. Do you have any symptoms when your headache begins, like flashes of light or rings around light sources? If so, you would have what is called "auras", a sign of "classic" migraines. If you don't have these warning signs, you would have "common" migraines.
People with classic migraines get a little extra advance warning that a migraine is coming on. At this point, you can take what is called an "abortive" medication, which usually prevents the migraine from taking hold. Usually, people with frequent migraines take a medication called a "preventative". They also usually have some type of "breakthrough" pain medication, in case the abortive doesn't work after a period of time. There are several choices for all three types of medications, based on your current health situation and any medical problems you might have.
You should discuss this with your doctor as soon as possible. I find it strange that he ordered a cat scan before discussing symptomology and medications, or at least giving you some samples while you are waiting for the cat scan. Doctors are very hesitant to call in pain prescriptions over the phone, so you should try to see your doctor as soon as possible, maybe on a walk-in basis.
