Question about the type of headache I'm experiencing...

I'm a chronic migraine sufferer...

but I have been experiencing extremely painful headaches for the past couple days.

It feels like someone is stabbing me in the head.

I know about Ice Pick Headaches... but this isn't one of those...as these stabbing headaches last sometimes an hour..

and it's on the top of my head on the left side...

and it HURTS...

does anyone have any idea what I mean?

My migraines are a lot different than this.

Hi Twiggygal,

Sorry you are getting these extra headaches. Have you had these before you have experienced them in the last few days? Is the pain just at the top of your head or is it anywhere else as well?

Sometimes we develop other headaches as time goes on, and it is important to keep your Doctor fully informed about any changes you experience in your headaches!

On a pain scale of 1 - 10 (10 being the most excruciating pain you could ever imagine) what number would you put these new headaches at? Please keep in touch.

I've had the very brief "ice pick headaches" throughout the years that last only seconds... but these are lasting a lot longer just over the past week...

and it's only on the top of my head...

These headaches... hmmm... I would rate them about a 7... I have to hold my head as they hurt badly... but not nearly as bad as my migraines...

There'll still not any fun tho.... :(

Hi Twiggygal,

I think the best advice I can give you is to discuss these new headaches with your Neuro when you see him next time, or it they are becoming a problem as soon as possible!

What types of meds are you on? I experianced this as well, but I believe topomax was the cause, because when I quit taking it, it stopped immediately. Good Luck ! :-) .....

I don't have a neuro... how do I find a good one?

Hi Twiggygal,

You may want to search for a headache clinic or a headache specialist. Depending on the area you live in--if you are open to sharing the general vicinity you live in, they are scattered throughtout the United States, and I am not sure about other countries, but I'm sure others could help out there! Just let us know.

Also if your having insurance pay, most companies make you have a referral from your primary physician. Good Luck ! :-)

I am in the Minneapolis area.

Unfortunately... I have no health insurance... so I'm not even sure I can afford a neuro at this point...

I'm still having trouble paying off the doctor bills from my last doctor visit (everytime I visit my doc to talk about my panic disorder or whatever it costs $175... this country is ridiculous with the cost of health care *sigh* )

So I don't know what to do.

The whole health insurance thing stinks--I'm sorry! The specialists are usually pretty expensive...Mine usually run about $125/visit, that is what they charge my insurance. I know all doctors are different though, so you could call the doctors office first and see how much it would cost and see what they say (I can't believe the cost of your other doctor appointment--just not fair, when you are the one trying to deal with your medical condition)...

In your area I found a place called Noran Clinic which has a website. I would definently call though, the first visit can be pricey sometimes, and then follow up visits not as bad. I go to a clinic--my first visit was very expensive, but the rest are about an average doctor office visit for me...I don't know anything about this clinic, I did a web search of headache clinics in your area and this is the one that popped up!

The other thing if you find that it is to expensive to see a neuro/headache specialist, do you see your primary regularly? Maybe would they be willing to help in the mean time--the only issue there is, the may have no clue as to the diagnosis-hmm, but you never know...

Have you noticed any other things with your headaches? Things with your eyes or nose?

My headaches always start in the eyes and my nose hurts a lot when I get my migraines... I feel like a vein is just pulsing painfully in my nose at times...

sounds weird but that's what I experience... sometimes I'll just hold my nose with two fingers hoping the pain will stop or press on my eyes...

I just hope they don't try to stop me from taking Lexapro if I get on migraine meds cuz I NEED my panic/anxiety meds hehe

I'm sorry you're having a tough time with these headaches.

I live in Canada, but have access to the US through the media, web, etc. Are you eligible for any kind of aid? Any agency that would help pay for your doctor's visits?
