Ten days off Topomax! I'm feeling pretty good. The depression has just about gone away. I've had two headaches, but was able to get rid of them easily with medication. My thinking is clearer and my friends say that I seem more like my old self (pre-topomax). So far, so good!

I took Topomax for 3 weeks and had to get off of it because it made me really depressed.  I don't have depression and have never been so depressed until I started taking that medication.  So I think for some people it can cause depression. I think I remember reading that it causes the nuerotransmitter Dopamine to release.  I"m not sure if Dopamine can cause depression.  But Topomax had some very bad side effects for me.

Still feeling much better after coming off Topomax. I have had only two migraines since then (Jan. 24th).

I'm new to the site and have been taking Topamax for 4 weeks. I'm getting headaches daily since taking Topamax and have to take Imitrex when they get worse around my cycle. I've only had a few headache free days. I felt better before I started the medication and now the depression side effect is getting to me. I've taking 100mg a day of Topamax but can taper up to 200mg. I've been seeing my neurologist for over two years, treating me for low blood pressure due to syncope episodes I've been having over the past 7 years that have been happening more frequently the past 2. Since the syncope episodes haven't stopped and the migraines are becoming more frequent, I thought I would try Topamax to treat the headaches and hopefully stop the syncope episodes. Any advice on whether or not the headaches will get better with the Topamax? I'm hoping that the depression is just something that will work through. Some of the other side effects aren't as apparent as they were when I started Topamax. Thanks!

I can't say whether topamax will help with your headaches or not, but I have heard great things about it.  I have been on it for 3-4 weeks, and haven't personally noticed a difference. I am at 100mg right now. I did experience depression, and yes I am sure that some of it has to do with being in constant pain, but my doctor put me on Cymbalta, an antidepressant used to treat chronic pain as well, and I am no longer depressed.

Thank you so much for your reply.  I was just taken off the Topamax since my headaches were still daily and not getting better in addition to the side effects of short term memory loss and depression.  I feel much better and I"m taking Imitrex for the headaches when they're bad. My doctor wants me to try Amitrityline, also an antidepressant, to help with the headaches.  I'm hoping this works, have you heard anything about it?

Hi there, I tried topomax myself. Hated it!!! I started at 25mg and ended up on 250 mg. My old neuro kept upping every time I called to let him know that it was not working. I had a bad case of migraine that started in Oct last year it stopped last month only having migraine during my monthly menstrual. I strated a new one 5 days now Butlbtl/apap/caff generic for fioricit and my migraine has not stopped I am now constipated with sromache cramps and pain. I do not know if it s from my menstrual since it ended yesterday. As for your prob. check with a doc first.

hi my name is brittney and im not taking topamx for migranes im taking it for a mood stablizer and it has caused me to get a lot more axienty attacks and a lot more depression that even my boyfriend has noticed. im only 16 1/2 and i was woundering if they should be putting me on such a high dosage as 150 mg that i take through out hte day it also upsets my stomach to a little bit. it has been getting to the point were i have been freaking out about the littlest things like the voulenteer center loosing my record and my PS2 breaking which normally calms my depression. so many things have gone on in the past few weeks that i feel like giving up and i just gave my docotr a call but i reallyd one know what else i can do or if it the topamax or not can any of you help ??

I am new here.
I was wondering, lojma, how long have you been on topamax? I am on 100mg at bedtime, and insurance no longer covers it. For that reason, I want to quit. I bought 6 pills today because that is all I could afford.
I take it for migraines for 4-5 years now. Also take Maxalt 10mg.

i'm kissfan and just like say topomax is a joke it did not work for me and orthere people...and the video i just saw is joke to and i will tell you why... first of if these nice ladys we're so much pain there life would revoled around the er. yes you can push threw at frist but after a while the pain always win topomax is not for migraines...as we all know there not 1 migraine that is the same with every person thats my thought but i mean what i say and stand by it.

I went to my doctor last week to complain of intense depression. I knew that it had begun in January, and has been constant since. We talked and it was actually her that figured out that January was when I went on my dosage of Topomax. It was clearly not me making it up that they were related because I was not even aware that Topomax is said to cause depression. I was completely oblivious... until my doctor noticed that I spiraled into depression for no reason the same time that I started a brand new medication that is said to cause depression. I am currently on a dosage of 75 mg at night and 50 mg in the morning.

Although Topomax works great for my migraines, it has caused a terrible depression, in which I have lost passion for all of the things I normally hold very dear. It has taken away almost a year of my life, and although it works wonders for migraines, I would be hesitant to reccommend it to anyone, in case they react to it the way I did. No matter what people say about depression being in your mind because you know you're on the drug--I had no idea that it was said to cause depression. It simply put me in a state for 6 months where I slept because I've had no energy, no passion, no desires, and no idea why until now. Call it what you will.. but once I am weaned off of it, I will never use Topomax again.
