Question About OXYCOTIN-Please Help

Hello.  My name is Boomer2uall and I am from the anxiety/panic forum.  I have a question and hope someone will be able to help me and not judge me.  I was in a very bad car accident about 4 years ago.  My head hit the dashboard at 65MPH.  Since that time, I have had extremly bad headaches.  I just had an MRI about a week ago and apparently I have a pinced nerve around my neck spine near my back of my head. 

Anyway, I was recently prescribed OXYCOTIN 10mg tablets.  In fact, I just had them filled today after seeing my doctor.  I am suppossed to take 2 tablets every 12 hours.  I just took one becuase I don't know what to expect from them.  Could someone please explain to me what I am supposed to feel?

I was on Tylenol 4's with codiene and after I took 2 of them, my headache did go away for about 6 hours and I also felt, well, really good.  Am I supposed to feel the same way on OXYCOTIN?

No, I am not looking for a "cheap buzz", but rather to at least be able to go out and about without having to lay down every 6 hours or so.

Hi Boomer2uall,

Sorry to hear about your accident, and that you are suffering with this.

Do you mean Oxycontin? As far as I know it is a strong pain killer, I have no personal experience of this to offer and hope that someone will come along who has!!

As with all these painkillers be aware of their ablitity for you to become reliant on them and develop dependancy!!!

Hi Ann.  Thank you so much for getting back to me with the kind words.  Yes, I am indeed refering to Oxycontin.  I am extremly aware that this medication is addictive.  But under the circumstances, I really have no choice but to take 2 (10mg) tablets a day.  I just took 1 last night for the first time and slept for a good 15 hours or so.  I just woke up about an hour ago with another amazing headache.

But last night I also had a really bad headache and it went away within about an hour or so.

I have tried Oxycontin once for a headache and didn't find it very helpful.  I have a couple of friends that are on it for chronic pain though, and it isn't only the fact that you become dependent on them, it's the fact that you will consistently need a higher does to achieve the same level of relief.  Not trying to dissuade you, but please do be careful and good luck.

Hi.  Thank you for your help.  There is no way that I can take 2 (10mg tablets) every 12 hours.  Again, I just woke up from last nights sleep.  So I don't think that I will take them everyday as my doctor had suggested.  Thus, I won't have to increase the dose.

However, I don't feel nothing at all when take one.  For all I know, it could just be a sugar pill...lol.  But they do make me tired and they do seem to get rid of a pounding headache but I can still feel that my headave is just "numb".

I went out and bought a pack of extra strength Advil.  I tend to get the worst headaches in the morning and thus, the temptaion to take an OXY by taking an Advil.

If anyone has any suggestions that will get rid of these incredible headaches, I am all ears.

You might get better answers if you post this on the Chronic Pain forum. A lot of people in the chronic pain room have had similar experiences as yours with a car accident. I was in a car accident too about 10 years ago and have had low back pain on and off for those years until last year when it hit me really bad, I've been going to a pain management clinic since last October 2006. I wish you good luck hun and I hope the Oxy can help with your pain. I've not had that pain med yet so I can't help you with that. Keep us posted and take care and lots of soft hugz.

Hi.  Just a little update.  I stopped taking Oxycotin completely.  I went back to my doctor and he prescribed me Tylenol 4's.  Yes, there is a Tylenol 4.  325mg of Ace-de-men-a-fen (sp) and 60mg of codiene and no caffiene.  I can't drink caffiene for other reasons.

Yes, just taking one of these gets rid of my headaches and yes, it's also a very addictive drug.  But it works a lot better than the Oxycotin.  If I take one Tylenol 4, the pain goes away for about 8 hours.
