Hello my name is Amanda and I'm a 20 year old female from Texas. For about i think like 3 months now I've been having really bad migraines. When this started at 1st i had pink eye so said my doctor. I was out from work for awhile for that. My eyes were sensitive to light and my eyes burned constantly and throbbed i got sent to a ophthalmologists, He ran some little tests on me and said that i have some blood vessels in my eyes that are i think he said growing crooked?? and they are starting to go down further into my cornea. He gave me the best of the meds for my eyes then. I took m meds went to see him in another week yet my eyes were still bothering me so he said keep taking them and he wanted to see me back in another week. The week past and i came back he said he wanted me to get a MRI done but i couldn't afford it $3000 and i don't have health insurance not to mention with me being so ill i haven't been able to work recently either i work at Wal Mart and they keep on trying to fire me cause of this I've tried going to work but my head hurts so much and my eyes bother me cause of light i now have to wear shades all the time in bright light. My eye doctor finally sends me to a Neurologist who gives me TOPOMAX i call to let him know that I get weak, nauseas, dizzy, and that I'm still light headed sensitive to light. He says give it a couple more months. I've given this medicine i think 2 months now along with other over the counter pain killers and he even gave me MAXALT but I'm not spending $20 a pill >.< I would if i had the money but i don't i cant even work cause I'm in so much pain. What should i do? Anyone have any suggestions for me please help me!

Hi Amanda,

Welcome to Healing Well. Sorry to hear that you are suffering so much. I am in the UK so do not understand the health system in the USA very well so forgive me if I don't seem to be on the ball!

Did you actually try the Maxalt and if so did it work? If it did work it could be worth the expense for when you are desperate! The right efficacy of Topamax needs time but it sounds like you have given it that but at what dose? It maybe you need to raise the dose!

My concern here is that you can somehow get an MRI scan to rule out anything else and to be clearer on what is happening with your eyes, I feel this is important, but totally understand the expense involved!

The most important thing is that you keep going back to the Docs until you have found the right thing to give you relief - that may take time! Please make your eye condition a priority, you may have 2 things going on here, your eyes and migraine!

Please be aware that this is only a personal opinion as I do not have any medical training to be able to diagnose, that is down to your Doctor.

Thank you for your reply.=) i took the maxalt and it didn't even faze my migraine i used to use Maxalt when i was about 13 for migraines and it helped and now it doesn't i also used to have to go through iv treatment? I took the Maxalt in 2 days this time around and i couldn't even tell it fazed me i used the medicine at work to see if i could make it through the work day and i made it though 1 day but the next was torture. I am a heavier set girl so i don't know if my weight is my problem or what my neurologist says my disks are fine? O yes I've also noticed that when i lay down sometimes it intensifies my headaches only way i can describe it is like my head is getting crushed ;_; i dunno what i have but its really starting to scare me cause i cant seem to find any comfort. My moms friend gave me some almonds and told me to eat them cause when she used to get migraines she used to eat almonds? I've done that lol only thing that happened is that i have a new snack i like now >.<

Hi Amanda,

If the Maxalt is not helping now and you have been suffering since the age of 13, I think it is time you saw a Neurologist who is a Headache Specialist as a matter of priority!!!!

Also on the other thread about Topamax you said you are feeling more irritable etc These sort of side effects are to be taken seriously and I think you would be better with another preventative! I am sure you read of my experiences on that thread!

The Docs often try to fob you off with the weight thing - take no notice it is just ignorance!!!! There are many reasons that being overweight can be a problem, but headache is not one of them!!!!

Wishing you well with this, please let me know how you get on with getting to see a Neuro etc.

I go back and see me Neuro here soon i dunno what hes going to say this time last time i saw him he had me take my shades off he looked in 1 eye with his little light and said give the Topomax a few more months and he left!!! i saw him for maybe a total of 3mins and then there went $80 for a visit. I had migraines yes when i was younger and they would come back off and on through the years but now this 1 has stayed with me for the past couple of months and has really become bothersome. I'm beginning to think maybe i need a new doctor?

Have you had an MRI? I have a Pineal gland cyst in my head and my doctor told me that he did not think the cyst was causing any problems because if it was causing my headaches they would hurt worse when I laid down. I say this because I read what you said about your headaches hurting more when you laid down. You should probably mention this to your nuero and see what he says. It is probably nothing, but I thought thought that I would just tell you incase this is something that would help you get rid of your headaches. BTW a pineal gland cyst is benign and is present in a very large percentage of the population, just no one knows it because they havent had a head MRI, and the cyst usually does not cause any problems. It is almost always an incidental finding. SO do not get worried over this, it is just something you may want to to mention, at least about your headaches hurting MORE when you lay down.

Good luck with your headaches and I hope that you find some relief and can get your life back together,
