Headache worse when lying flat

Hi everyone. I get headaches a lot except and I've had MRI's done of my brain which was pretty normal. However yesterday I got a headache which started on my left temple only. I was feeling well in the morning (funny vision and feeling crappy) and so I knew a headache was coming. It stuck there all day and night. When I went to go to bed the pain didnt go away but i forced myself to sleep. I woke up at 5 am with no longer pain on my temple but now my whole head...like a tension headache. I noticed when I sat up I felt better and when I layed down the pain came back. This morning when I got up around 10am I again felt better sitting up. Is this a really bad sign??? Im scared...has anyone experienced this ... lying down maked the headache worse???

Hi Neurogirl,

Sorry to hear that you are going through this. There are what are sometimes referred to as 'postural headaches', which affect you when you stand or lie down. Please talk to your Doctor about this, preferrably a Neurologist who is a Headache Specialist. They will try to find out what is going on and the best way forward for you.

Do you know what its a sign of though? I've been to a neuro and had an MRI which was normal. The headache is gone today thank God but Im curious if it was something serious...

Hi Neurogirl,

It is not a sign of anything necessarily, if they have done an MRi and found nothing, that means that they have ruled out anything serious!!!

Trouble is with headaches sometimes is that you become convinced that you have something seriously wrong cos the pain is so frequent and intense!!! But the truth of the matter is that if it is something serious usually headache is the last symptom you get, you usually know there is something really wrong by the time the headaches start!!

Try not to worry and get yourself to a Headache Specialist.
